New York Red Bulls Biography and Career:

Florida-based Orlando City Soccer Club is an American professional soccer team that plays in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). In 2015, Orlando City SC became the 21st club in Major League Soccer, following the USL Pro team of the same name that had been in existence since 1999. Since Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny both disbanded after the 2001 season, they became Florida’s first MLS franchise. Downtown Orlando is where the team plays.

It was on October 25, 2010, that the Austin Aztex were sold to Orlando Sports Holdings, a new British investment group. There were a number of British owners, such as Phil Rawlins, who would become main shareholders of Orlando Sports Holdings (he owned the English Premier League club Stoke City at the time).

Because of the sale’s purpose, it was instantly clear. Orlando Sports Holdings aspired to own an MLS club. “The objective is to build up soccer operations in order to seek an MLS franchise in the next several years,” Phil Rawlins said on the Aztex’s website. The absence of local investors and revenue-generating possibilities at the Austin facilities were also highlighted as factors for the sale.

Orlando City Soccer Club leaders met twice with MLS Commissioner Don Garber to discuss all of the responsibilities that come with being an MLS team following the transfer. This time, Don Garber met with municipal and county authorities and discussed the prospect of a new MLS franchise for Orlando in early March of 2012.

“Orlando has never been on our list in the past,” said Garber on his first public visit to the city in 2012. As of now, it’s on our to-do list.” Orlando City SC became the 21st MLS team on November 19, 2013, a little over a year and a half after the announcement. Flavio Augusto da Silva, a Brazilian investor, has purchased the club. In the present day, he is still the owner of the club.

While these discussions were taking place, Orlando City Soccer Club was playing in the USL Pro, the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. The team had a successful four-year run in the USL Professional. Orlando City Soccer Club won the USL Pro Championship in its first season in 2011 and ended first in the league.

The team won the USL Pro Regular Season title again in 2012 but fell short in the playoff semifinals. Even though the team came in a distant second place the following year, it was able to capture its second straight USL Pro Championship crown. Third USL Pro Regular Season championship in 2014 for the team.

In Harrison, New Jersey, the New York Red Bulls are an American professional soccer team. Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference includes the New York Red Bulls (MLS). The New York/New Jersey MetroStars were founded in October 1994 and made their debut in the league’s first season in 1996. In 2006, the team was sold to Red Bull GmbH and renamed as part of the company’s worldwide network of football clubs, which led to the team’s present name..

Before then, they played in Giants Stadium. Since 2010, they’ve played at Red Bull Arena. New York City FC, the other MLS team headquartered in the New York metropolitan area, joined the league in 2015. The Hudson River Derby pits the two teams against one other. Ex-USA international midfielder Chris Armas is now the team’s head coach.

On March 9, 2006, Red Bull GmbH, an Austrian energy drink company, bought the club and as part of their sponsorship, they would also totally re-brand the franchise, altering the name, colours, and emblem, a decision that attracted mixed responses. The name of the club was changed to “Red Bull New York,” and the squad was renamed the “New York Red Bulls” by the league and the media alike.

There were worries about the expense of purchasing the MetroStars’ territorial rights to New York City, and the difficulties of acquiring a stadium site inside the city, which prompted Red Bull to acquire the MetroStar franchise and take over their current stadium project in Harrison, New Jersey instead. As part of the deal, a second New York area franchise’s territorial rights were returned to the MLS.

Bruce Arena, a Brooklyn native who had just left his post as head coach of the United States national team, was hired by Red Bull to replace Johnston in 2006. Claudio Reyna, Juan Pablo Angel, and Jozy Altidore were all signed as designated players for the squad shortly after, and Altidore emerged as one of the league’s best young prospects. They beat Bayern Munich 4–2 in a friendly at Giants Stadium and lost 4–1 to FC Barcelona in front of a sold-out crowd in East Rutherford that summer.

More than 66,000 people showed out to see the New York Red Bulls take on the Los Angeles Galaxy in David Beckham’s first game in the league on August 18, 2007. The New York Red Bulls made it to the 2007 MLS Playoffs under Arena’s leadership, but the New England Revolution knocked them out in the first round. Arena resigned as Red Bulls coach on November 5, 2007, only two days later. In the off-season, Red Bull signed Juan Carlos Osorio, a Colombian coach, from Chicago Fire.

After a dismal 2009 season, the New York Red Bulls had a new stadium built, new coaches, and a new set of players for the 2010 season, which they thought would lead to a significant improvement. The Red Bulls officially announced on January 7th, 2010, the appointment of longtime Swedish manager Hans Backe as head coach. A few weeks after Backe was confirmed as a coach, numerous players signed by Osorio like Jorge Rojas and Danny Cepero were released; Carlos Johnson and Walter Garci were also let go; Matthew Mbuta’s contract was not renewed for the 2010 season.

Instead of acquiring South American and Central American players, the team adopted a fresh strategy under Backe and newly appointed Norwegian sports director Erik Solér, which focused on signing seasoned European players (mostly from Scandinavia and the United Kingdom).

As a result of Backe’s leadership, the Red Bulls were unbeaten in the preseason of 2010 and won their first-ever match at Red Bull Arena, 3–1. Joel Lindpere, the recently signed Estonian international midfielder, scored the first goal at Red Bull Arena during this preseason game. When the Red Bulls played their first MLS match at Red Bull Arena, they won 1–0, with Joel Lindpere scoring the only goal. Breaking a 27-game road losing record, the Red Bulls beat the Sounders 1–0 at Qwest Field in Seattle a week later.

In July of that year, the club named Thierry Henry as a designated player, bringing in the great French striker. Rafael Márquez, a Mexican international defender, became the Red Bulls’ third designated player on August 2. With the addition of Márquez, the Red Bulls became the first MLS side to field a lineup with three clearly defined players. The Red Bulls’ Eastern Conference lead was secured for the first time since 2000 as a result of these new acquisitions.

After a dismal season in which they finished with only 21 points, the New York Yankees established an MLS record for the greatest one-season turnaround. The Red Bulls’ season ended in defeat, despite an amazing comeback. A heartbreaking loss to the San Jose Earthquakes ended New York Red Bulls’ postseason hopes in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. The season’s Most Valuable Player was Joel Lindpere..

New European players such as Luke Rodgers, Jan Gunnar Solli, and Teemu Taini were brought in before to the 2011 season, while Thierry Henry was named as the team’s captain. When Richie Williams and Des McAleenan were sacked for contract breaches during training camp, the season started under a cloud of scandal.

Henry’s lack of goalscoring form and set-piece defensive troubles plagued the Red Bulls in the first half of the 2011 season, which resulted in a string of winless streaks. In July, the Red Bulls were knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals by the Chicago Fire, 4–0, and Backe’s choice to send a reserve team to Chicago with assistant coach Mike Petke drew a lot of criticism from fans.

When Backe said he had no clue that he would lose so many players to international competitions, notably the CONCACAF Gold Cup, he received more criticism at this age. A designated player transaction in July brought in seasoned German goaltender Frank Rost to the New York Red Bulls in place of Bouna Coundoul and Greg Sutton. In 2011, the New York Red Bulls overcame Paris St. Germain to win the Emirates Cup in London. On aggregate, the Red Bulls were knocked out of the MLS Cup playoffs by the eventual champion Los Angeles Galaxy, ending their season.

Sean Davis was named the club’s first-ever homegrown captain before the 2020 season. Sports Director Kevin Thelwell said on September 4, 2020 that Armas and CJ Brown had been formally terminated from their contracts after a poor start to the 2020 season’ (including a group-stage exit from the MLS is Back Tournament). It was the next day when Bradley Carnell was named as interim manager.

Gerhard Struber, the former manager of Barnsley and a former Red Bull Salzburg player and development coach, was named by Thelwell as the club’s next manager on October 6, 2020. When the Red Bulls, now headed by Carnell, reached the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, Struber made his MLS Cup Playoffs debut owing to the COVID-19 epidemic’s delays. While he was manager, the team lost to Columbus by a score of 3–2.

Caden Clark scored three goals in as many games in the second half of the 2020 season, all coming in the playoffs for the first time. Clark will join RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 after an agreement was completed with the Bundesliga team.

It was the day before Bento Estrela, the club’s 15-year-old academy product, celebrated his 15th birthday that Thelwell and Struber brought in 12 new players from European and South American clubs for the 2021 MLS season, making him the club’s youngest-ever signing. Celtic F.C. striker Patryk Klimala was also signed as a designated player by Red Bull Salzburg.
