Stephen Schwartz Biography and Career:

Born on March 6, 1948, Stephen Lawrence Schwartz is a lyricist and composer who works in the field of musical theater in the United States. Throughout his career, which has spanned more than half a century, Schwartz has written several successful musicals, including Godspell (1971), Pippin (1972), and Wicked (2003). Enchanted (2007), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), and The Prince of Egypt (1998, music and lyrics) are only a few of the films that he has given words to. He has also contributed to the music for several other great films.

The Grammy Awards, the Academy Awards, and the Golden Globe Award are just some of the many honors that Schwartz has received throughout his career. He is a recipient of six Tony Award nominations in addition to a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In 2015, he was one of the recipients of the Isabelle Stevenson Award at the Tony Awards. Schwartz was born in New York City to a Jewish family. His mother, Sheila Lorna (née Siegel), was a teacher, and his father, Stanley Leonard Schwartz, was a merchant. Schwartz was of Jewish descent.

In 1964, he received his diploma from Mineola High School, which he attended when he was growing up in the Williston Park neighborhood of Nassau County, New York. Pippin, Pippin was the name of Schwartz’s early version of Pippin, which he created and directed when he was a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Scotch’n’Soda was the student-run theater organization that he worked with. In 1968, Schwartz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from Carnegie Mellon University, where he had previously studied.

When Schwartz got back to New York City, he started working as a producer for RCA Records. However, not long after that, he started working in Broadway theater. He was invited to serve as the musical director of The Survival of St. Joan, which was the first rock opera to be performed in the United States. He was recognized as the producer of the double album of the soundtrack that was released by Paramount Records. The record was produced in collaboration with the progressive rock band Smoke Rise.

Butterflies Are Free was his first significant credit, and he was responsible for writing the title song for the play. The song was subsequently utilized in the movie adaptation of the play. In 1971, he composed the music and lyrics for the musical Godspell, for which he also received several prizes, including two Grammys. In 1972, he sent an invitation to Paul Shaffer to serve as the musical director for the production of this musical in Toronto, which marked the beginning of Shaffer’s career.

After Godspell, the English-language texts were written in partnership with Leonard Bernstein for Bernstein’s Mass, which was performed in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, District of Columbia before it opened to the public. The long-running musical Pippin had its debut on Broadway in the year 1972. During his time in college, Schwartz began writing songs for the musical Pippin; however, none of the songs that were written for the college version were ultimately used in the Broadway production.

Two years following the premiere of Pippin, Schwartz composed the music and lyrics for The Magic Show, which was in production for a little under two thousand performances. Schwartz had three musicals that were concurrently performing in New York City by the middle of 1974 when he was just 26 years old. Following that, the music and lyrics of The Baker’s Wife, shut down before making its way to Broadway in 1976, following a test tour that took place outside of the city.

The cast CD, on the other hand, went on to achieve a cult reputation, which resulted in several additional performances. These productions included one in London directed by Trevor Nunn in the year 1990 and another at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in the year 2005. Schwartz’s next Broadway endeavor was a musical adaptation of Studs Terkel’s Working, which he adapted and directed. He won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director for this production, and he added four songs to the show while he was directing it.

As part of the American Playhouse series on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), he also served as a co-director for the television production. Schwartz wrote a book for children titled “The Perfect Peach” in the year 1977. Twenty years later, Schwartz reworked, enlarged, and created Captain Louie, which was a one-act musical for children called The Trip. Schwartz penned the songs for the show in the 1980s.

After that, he composed the music for three of the songs that participated in the Off-Broadway Revue Personals, as well as the words to the music that Charles Strouse composed for the musical Rags. Children of Eden was a musical that Schwartz composed both the music and the lyrics in the year 1991. Subsequently, he embarked on a career in the film industry, working together with the renowned composer Alan Menken to write the music for the Disney animated films Pocahontas (1995) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Both of these films earned him two Academy Awards.
