Andy Carroll Biography and Career:

It was released in 1997 that Andrew’s first New York Times best-seller, LETTERS OF A NATION: A Collection of Extraordinary American Letters, was named a bestseller. Andrew founded the Legacy Project a year later, in part as a result of the war letters he discovered while researching the book. The Legacy Project is an all-volunteer effort to commemorate veterans, active-duty military, and their families by preserving their wartime communication. Andrew has gone to all 50 states as well as more than 40 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, and he has amassed an estimated 100,000 letters (and emails) from soldiers who have served in every war in the history of the United States of America. Andrew generously gave this large collection to Chapman University, which received it free of charge. Legacy Project has been renamed “The Center for American War Letters,” and the collection has been moved to Chapman University’s Leatherby Library, where it will be preserved. Andrew’s work with the Center continues to search for, preserve, and raise awareness about the need of preserving war-related letters and emails, which he began doing while in high school.

The New York Times bestseller books WAR LETTERS and BEHIND THE LINES, both of which include hundreds of previously unreleased correspondences from American battles, were also edited by Andrew, who has written two additional New York Times bestselling books. While WAR LETTERS served as the inspiration for the highly praised PBS documentary of the same name, it was also nominated for a Grammy in the “Spoken Word” category for the audio version of the book. In 2007, Carroll produced a smaller anthology titled GRACE UNDER FIRE: Letters of Faith in Times of War, which focuses on religion and spirituality in battle and is available on Amazon.

The Armed Services Copies (ASEs), which were pocket-sized editions of best-selling novels that were provided to soldiers and women during World War II, were again reintroduced under Andrew’s leadership. More than 500,000 free ASEs have been provided to U.S. soldiers across the globe since Andrew started working with major publishers in 2000 to republish the books, including thousands of copies that Andrew personally distributed in Baghdad and Kabul.

Andrew was approached by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in 2004 and invited to take part in Operation Homecoming, a program created by the NEA in conjunction with the Department of Defense. Members of the military, their loved ones, and veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan were urged to submit short stories, poems, letters, and other fiction and nonfiction materials to the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the initiative. A compilation of these pieces was edited by Andrew on a pro gratis basis, and the book was named OPERATION HOMECOMING: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families. The anthology was the inspiration for the Emmy-award-winning documentary “Operation Homecoming.”

As part of the Operation Homecoming initiative, Andrew developed a pamphlet titled “A Guide for Writers,” which may (and has been) utilized by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder counselors as well as by individual soldiers and veterans who are interested in writing about their experiences. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Bethesda Naval Hospital, the St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan are among locations where Andrew has personally conducted PTSD group therapy sessions.
