In addition to being known as Atlanta United, the club also plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference. They are the most recent winners of the U.S. Open Cup, which took place in June. Atlanta United was founded in 2014 and became the twenty-second team in the Major League Soccer (MLS) when it joined as an expansion team in 2017. The club also operates the Atlanta United Regional Development School, a pre-academy feeder programme for players aged 8–14 that provides training and development for advanced local players while also identifying potential academy players.
The club also operates the United Juniors Program, a special development programme that provides supplemental development for U-12 players who are currently playing for other Atlanta-area youth clubs, as well as the Atlanta United Youth Academy. Announcing plans for training facilities, academy facilities, and a sporting headquarters in Decatur in August 2015, the club drew widespread attention. However, the results of an environmental and geotechnical feasibility study revealed that the site on Memorial Drive was unsuitable, and the facility’s construction was halted in November 2015. Instead, a 33-acre site on Franklin Gateway in Marietta was chosen for the facility’s construction.
The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, a $60 million facility that opened on April 11, 2017, was dedicated on that day. An approximately 30,000 square foot building that serves as the club’s sporting headquarters and houses locker rooms for the first team, reserve teams and academy teams as well as a full-service dining hall and sports science facilities, which include a gymnasium and two hydrotherapy plunge pools, are among the features of the facility.
The complex also has six outdoor training fields, one of which serves as a showcase field with a seating capacity of 2,500 people and a concession stand. It was unanimously agreed upon by the Marietta City Council on March 28, 2019, to sell the club an extra 17 acres (6.9 ha) of land in order to expand the club’s training facilities. The council also decided to extend the existing facility’s lease on city-owned land for an additional five years. Atlanta United FC is a subsidiary of AMB Sports & Entertainment.
