Columbus SC Biography and Career:

The Columbus Crew, originally known as Columbus Crew SC and briefly as Columbus SC, is an American professional soccer team based in Columbus, Ohio. The club was founded in 1992 by a group of Columbus residents. The club was founded in 1996 as one of the league’s founding members and has been a member of the league since.  An ownership group led by the Haslam family (also owners of the Cleveland Browns) and former team physician Pete Edwards is currently in charge of the organisation.

The team is based in Cleveland. The Haslam/Edwards family is the club’s third ownership group in the club’s 125-year history. The franchise was established in the year 1994. Lower.com Field will serve as the team’s home stadium when it opens in 2021. From 1999 to 2021, the Crew played their home games at Historic Crew Stadium (formerly Mapfre Stadium and Columbus Crew Stadium), which was the first soccer-specific stadium built for an MLS team and had a seating capacity of 19,968 as of the 2015 season.

The stadium was demolished after the 2015 season. From 1996 to 1998, the Crew’s home games were held at Ohio Stadium, which is located on the campus of The Ohio State University.  As a result of the team’s record-breaking attendance in 2014, both the greatest total attendance and the most sellouts were set.

The Crew have won six major trophies, including the MLS Cup in 2008 and 2020, the Supporters’ Shield in 2004, 2008, and 2009, and the U.S. Open Cup in 2002, among others. The Crew have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League (or its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup) four times, reaching the quarter-finals on three of those instances and reaching the semifinals on the other.

Black has traditionally been the colour of the alternate uniform. As time went on, The Crew began to lean more toward a white uniform with yellow and black trim or stripes, rather than the traditional black outfit. In spite of this, The Crew rarely wears their away uniforms because of the overwhelming preference for the traditional home uniform; and also because the historically black jerseys exacerbate the summer heat in the United States environment.

For the 2015 season, the Crew’s alternate uniform will be a black jersey, as it was in previous seasons. Prior to the team’s inaugural Major League Soccer season, a citywide public contest was held to choose the team’s name. The winning entry, which was the very first, was a hit, and the Columbus Crew was established. From 1996 to 2014, the Crew’s club badge was distinctive among Major League Soccer teams in that it incorporated humans, with three silhouetted males wearing construction hats beneath a stylised “Crew” wordmark, which was a first for the league.

In order to reflect a group of hardworking individuals, the logo was designed to seem similar to the hardworking, blue-collar image that the city of Columbus promotes. When owner Anthony Precourt took over the business in 2013, he immediately implemented a rebranding campaign, citing a gap between what the crest represented and the city’s identity in the twenty-first century. Columbus, according to Precourt, no longer qualifies as a true blue-collar town, and the industrial/manufacturing motif is no longer representative.

In truth, Columbus had developed into a 21st-century metropolis that was considerably more “dynamic and diversified.” A sold-out crowd of 24,741 witnessed the Columbus Crew defeat the New England Revolution 2–0 on May 15, 1999, to officially open Columbus Crew Stadium, which was the first soccer-specific stadium in Major League Soccer history. It has served as a model stadium for the rest of the league and has been one of the stadiums used by the United States national team during World Cup qualifying competitions.

The naming rights to the stadium were purchased by the insurance company Mapfre, which has its headquarters in Madrid.  During their time there, they finished with a 33–20 record. Besides the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, which is owned by the Ohio State University and serves as home to the OSU soccer teams, the team has also played in two other U.S. Open Cup games: two in 2005 and one in 2016 at the FirstEnergy Stadium–Cub Cadet Field on the campus of the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.

To make way for a stage that would generate more revenue by hosting concerts and other events, the Columbus Crew front office removed the north stands before the 2008 season, where the most dedicated of Crew supporters had gathered. Prior to this, the team’s three fans’ groups (the Crew Supporters Union, the Hudson Street Hooligans, and La Turbina Amarilla) had been divided due to disparities in age and ethnicity amongst the factions. Because of the construction of the stage, the groups were obliged to congregate in the north corner of the stadium, making a single huge block of vociferous supporters.

Those three groups came together to construct the Nordecke (/neck/), which is German for “north corner,” in honour of the city’s German origin and to commemorate it. In 2006, a significant contingent of Crew fans from the Nordecke began travelling together to support the team while they were on the road against other teams. The term “NorOnTour” became popular on social networking sites in late 2009/early 2010 to characterise the regular fan travelling support that was provided.
