Colorado State Rams football Biography and Career:

The Colorado State Rams football team (established in 1893) represents Colorado State University and is a member of the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Since entering the Mountain West in 1999, the Rams have won or shared conference championships in three of the previous four seasons. Colorado, Wyoming, and Air Force are among the teams with whom the Rams have long-standing rivalries. The squad is presently headed by Jay Norvell, who is in his first season as head coach after being appointed in December 2021.

Since 2017, the Rams have played their home games at Canvas Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Formerly known as Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium, the club played there for 49 seasons (1968–2016). On August 26, the Colorado State Rams hosted their debut game at Canvas Stadium (then known as Colorado State Stadium for just the 2017 season). The Rams won, 58–27, against the Oregon State Beavers.

F.O. Congdon and 18 other students from Colorado Agricultural College who were enrolled at the time made the decision on December 12, 1892, to organize the school’s first American football team in order to compete against other institutions in the region. The CACs were the team’s moniker (which would subsequently be altered to Aggies and eventually Rams), which was derived from the school’s acronym (Colorado Agricultural College).

A tiny private hybrid college/high school called Longmont Academy agreed to challenge the CAC team to a game that would be the first in the history of both schools once the squad returned from its Christmas break in January. It was on January 7, 1893, when the first game in the school’s history took place in Longmont, Colorado. Earlier the morning, Colorado Agricultural players and supporters went to a dry goods shop in Longmont and purchased orange and green ribbons, the school’s colors, to wear to the game.

When Colorado Agricultural College President Alston Ellis decided to dissolve the team after just one game in the 1894 season, the squad continued to compete without a head coach until the next year. W. J. Forbes, a 25-year-old University of Vermont alumnus, was hired as the program’s first-ever football coach after Ellis’ departure from the school in 1899. Forbes was the program’s first-ever football coach. Forbes was the captain of the 1899 squad, which finished with a 0–2–1 record. A disagreement between officials from the two schools resulted in a controversial conclusion to the first-ever Border War game, which took place on Thanksgiving Day, November 30, 1899, in the first-ever game that Colorado Agricultural played outside of the state of Colorado (and their first-ever game against Wyoming).

Officials for the game were supplied by the schools that were participating in it at the time. A Wyoming forfeit was declared at the conclusion of the game when Colorado agricultural official Edward House found that Wyoming official E.D. McArthur and the Wyoming team had refused to comply with the rules. After the forfeit was declared and the Colorado Agricultural players started to leave the field, official McArthur allegedly yelled that he “didn’t give a damn about the rules” and authorized the Wyoming squad to run in a touchdown to tie the game. According to reports, this conduct sparked a battle between the two squads.

Barton Aylesworth, the president of Colorado Agricultural College, said after the game that his institution would not participate in any sports event against Wyoming until it got a formal apology from the university. The two teams met again the following year, and there has been animosity between the two programs ever since then. As a result of an NCAA regulation that prohibits the recognition of forfeits in games that were not completed, Colorado State University does not record the game as a win in their record books.

W. J. Forbes, the team’s head coach, died in a strange accident on June 18, 1900, only weeks before the start of the 1900 season. Toomey replaced Forbes as head coach of the Rams, who finished with a 1–3 record during the 1900 campaign. It had a terrible 14-14 record between 1899 and 1910, with seven different persons serving as a head coach throughout the course of the decade.

After accepting the role of athletic director and head football coach at Colorado Agricultural University in 1911, Harry W. Hughes transformed the squad from one that had gone winless in 1911 to one that finished as conference champions and unbeaten in 1915. Hughes also contributed to the construction of Colorado Field, which was the first sodded football field in Colorado history, and which replaced Durkee Field (1899–1911). From 1912 through 1967, Colorado Field served as the home of the Colorado Agricultural/A&M Aggies and the Colorado State Rams, respectively.

Harry Hughes was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s most successful player, winning eight conference titles in 1915, 1916, 1919, 1920, 1925, 1927, 1933, and 1934. From 1926 until his retirement, he served as a member of the National Rules Committee of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. During his tenure as football coach at Texas A&M from 1911 to 1941, Hughes also served as the school’s athletic director until his retirement in 1953.

Hughes was awarded the label “Dean of American Football Coaches” by sportswriters and other coaches in the early 1930s because of his many seasons as head coach at the same institution. He was widely regarded as one of the fairest and sportsmanlike football coaches in the history of the United States. He was the football coach at the school from 1911 to 1941, and after stepping down as football coach in 1946, he continued to serve as the athletic director until 1953. On Harry Hughes Day, November 8, 1952, he was inducted into the Helms Football Hall of Fame, which he had founded after his retirement.

Hughes was a severe disciplinarian who designed a play in 1914 that became known as the Million Dollar Play. Hughes was considered a harsh but fair coach. This triple pass, which was based on the single-wing formation, was an end-around move that helped Hughes propel his teams to national prominence. Some of Hughes’ most notable players were Ralph “Sag” Robinson (All-American Honorable Mention in 1916), Kenneth Hyde (1925 All-American 3rd team), and Glenn Morris (All-American Honorable Mention in 1917). (1936 US Olympic Decathlon Gold Medal winner). Hughes, who played for John Mosley from 1939 and 1942, was the first black player to break the color barrier in contemporary Colorado football in 1939. Since 1943, the team has been coached by Julius Wagner, a former Hughes assistant coach, who took over as head coach in 1945 after the university did not field a team in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II.
