Old Dominion Monarchs football Biography and Career:
The Old Dominion Monarchs football team represents Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Known as the William & Mary Norfolk Division Braves in 1930, the club was the first version of the team that was formed that year. For the first two seasons of its existence, the current Monarchs squad, which was created in 2009, played at the FCS level as an unaffiliated team.
In the 2011 season, they entered the Colonial Athletic Association of the FCS, which allowed them to add league games to their schedule. They remained in the CAA until 2014 when they joined the FBS’s Conference USA. In 2022, they will become a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
According to sports historian Peter Stewart, in September 1930, a reporter inquired of Coach Tommy Scott about the possibility of establishing a football team for the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. Even though Scott admitted that he had not thought about fielding a squad, within two days, a team was “hurriedly cobbled together” and started competing against other tiny universities.
During the second half of December 1932, the squad traveled to Miami, Florida, to take against the University of Miami Hurricanes, after the four-year institution submitted an invitation to William & Mary that the two-year Norfolk Division received by mistake. The institution played football for 11 seasons (1930–1940), with a record of 42–36–4. The program was terminated as a result of a regulation prohibiting freshmen players, a $10,000 debt, and accrediting concerns, among other reasons. The team lost every game in its last season, and attendance was low. According to Stewart, World War II would have certainly forced the program to terminate regardless of the other reasons for its discontinuation.
According to Senior Associate Athletic Director Debbie White, ODU has attempted to resurrect a football team multiple times in the past. The institution desired to strengthen links with alumni, many of whom expressed a desire for an ODU football team during exit interviews before graduation and who were infrequent visitors to the school. With a vote of 14–0, the Board of Visitors authorized the formation of a new football team to play alongside the university’s other sports teams at the NCAA Division I level on Friday, June 14, 2005.
The new football team was scheduled to begin the competition in 2009. Athletic Director Jim Jarrett announced that Bobby Wilder, who was then the assistant head football coach at the University of Maine, would take over as head coach on February 9, 2007, and the club signed its first recruiting class the following year. As is common with many new football teams, all of the players in 2008 were given the opportunity to redshirt. These individuals, as well as members of the 2009 recruiting class and transfer players, were the core of the inaugural 2009 lineup.
Old Dominion began competing in 2009 as an independent team at the Division I FCS level (previously known as I-AA), and in 2011 the team became a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Monarchs ended the season with a 9–2 record, their best record in 68 years, and they’re first in a competitive season. That was the finest winning record ever for a first-year program in the modern era of college football, and it was accomplished by the University of Florida.
In their two losses, the Monarchs were outscored by a combined total of eight points. For the first time in Wilder’s tenure, his team concluded the season rated in the top ten in five FCS statistical categories, including second place in sacks allowed, third in scoring offense, third in turnover margin, and second place in net punting. The 2009 Monarchs finished seventh in the nation in rushing offense.
ODU was sixth in the FCS in terms of attendance in 2009, selling out all of their home games at Foreman Field, which seats 19,782 people. Season tickets for the Monarchs’ debut season sold out rapidly, prompting the school to issue refunds to 1,065 customers who had placed purchases.
Foreman Field, which had previously served as the home of the ODU field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams, was refurbished to make way for the new football program. The Powhatan Sports Complex is now home to field hockey and women’s lacrosse, which were formerly housed elsewhere.
Old Dominion finished with a 26–7 record in its first three seasons of the competition after its rebirth and earned a place in the 2011 FCS playoffs after hosting and beating crosstown foe Norfolk State. Aside from that, on October 3, 2011, after playing 27 games in its “modern age,” ODU got their first Top 25 ranking, coming out at No. 21 in a survey conducted by The Sports Network. After participating in 33 games, the Monarchs were placed among the top ten teams in the country.
