Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks football Biography and Career:

ULM Warhawks Football (also known as ULM Warhawks) is a collegiate football program that represents the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM). The Warhawks compete in the American Football Conference (AFC) and in the Northeast Louisiana Conference (NELC) (ULM).

The University of Louisiana at Monroe participates in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, where it has been in existence since 1931. The Warhawks’ home games are held at JPS Field at Malone Stadium, which is situated on the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s campus in Monroe, Louisiana. They competed in their first-ever FBS bowl game on December 28, 2012, in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, and were defeated by the Ohio Bobcats 45–14 in the Independence Bowl. What is now Louisiana was once a part of the United States of America.

Through 1950, Monroe competed as a junior college, which was the school’s initial designation. Northeast Louisiana State College competed as the Indians in their first season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1951. James L. Malone served as the team’s head coach for three seasons, compiling a record of 12–15 in that time. In 1953, Malone resigned from his position and Malone Stadium, where the club now plays its home games, was dedicated in his honor. Devone Payne, who coached Northeast Louisiana for three seasons from 1954 and 1957, succeeded Malone as the team’s head coach. His overall record was 15–22–1 at the time of his death. The program’s third head coach was Jack Rowan, who led the team to a 20–37 record in six seasons.

Dixie White, an offensive line coach at Louisiana State University, became the school’s fourth head coach in 1963. During this time period, White also served as the sports director for the school. During White’s stint as coach, Northeast Louisiana posted a 31–45–1 overall record. Ollie Keller, a former Memphis assistant coach, was hired to replace White as the head coach at Northeast Louisiana, and the Indians went 14–24–3 during his tenure as head coach. Keller resigned after four seasons with the organization.

Northeast Louisiana Indians football team was managed by former Heisman Trophy winner quarterback John David Crow for five seasons, including a winning 6–4–1 record in 1978 and another winning record in 1980, a 7–4 campaign.

Pat Collins, a long-time Louisiana Tech assistant coach, was appointed to take over as head coach of the Indians football team in 1981. Powered by first-team All-America Stan Humphries, the 1987 Indians club finished the regular season with an overall record of 9–2 in their first season together. Division I-A opponents Lamar and Southwestern Louisiana were defeated in the defeats. Three other teams ended with perfect records, including the Indians, who went 6–0 to win their first Southland Conference title.

In order to get to the final game in Pocatello, Idaho, North Texas, Eastern Kentucky, and Northern Iowa beat NLU on their way there. The Indians squared battle against the Marshall Thundering Herd in the I-AA National Championship game, which was held at the Idaho State University MiniDome in Pocatello. Humphries led the Indians to a pair of late touchdowns in the championship game, giving them a 43–42 victory over Marshall. Collins left the Indians football program after the 1988 season, having compiled a 57–35 record during his tenure.

When head coach Dave Roberts took over, the Indians continued to enjoy success and prominence, reaching the NCAA Division IAA Quarterfinals in 1992 and posting a 10–3 record the following year, which was followed by a 9–3 record the following year, 1993. Roberts’ overall record at the University of Louisiana at Monroe was 37–20–2. Following the 1993 season, Roberts joined the staff of Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz as an assistant coach. Ed Zaunbrecher took over for Roberts and finished with a record of 20–36 in five seasons as the team’s head coach. Following the 1999 season, Zaunbrecher was fired due to his inability to build on the successes of his predecessors.

A high point of the Zaunbrecher era occurred in 1994 when the Indians defeated Kentucky in their season finale in Lexington. It was the first time in the program’s history that the Indians defeated an SEC opponent. In 1995, the Indians defeated Mississippi State in Starkville to earn their second victory over an SEC opponent in the history of the program.

Bobby Keasler took over as head coach of the McNeese State Indians football team in 1999 and struggled, compiling an 8–28 record in three seasons and a partial fourth season as the Indians’ head coach. Keasler was fired after three games of the 2002 season. For the 2001 season, Louisiana–Monroe moved from the Independent Athletic Conference to the Sun Belt Conference, where they had previously competed as a member.
