Arkansas State Red Wolves football Biography and Career:

A team representing Arkansas State University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football competition, the Arkansas State Red Wolves compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Arkansas State University was established in 1911, and it has participated as a member of the Sun Belt Conference since its inception in 2001. Centennial Bank Stadium, located on the Jonesboro campus, serves as their home field, and their head coach is Butch Jones.

With more than 450 victories and seven bowl appearances under their belts, the Red Wolves have collected 11 conference titles in 105 seasons of football. Arkansas State’s most recent conference championship occurred in 2016 when they won their fifth title in as many years to earn their fifth straight crown.

Arkansas State University was formed in 1909, and it was only two years later that the institution fielded its first football team. Because of the First World War, the squad was forced to temporarily dissolve in 1918. It wasn’t until 1929 that Arkansas State became a member of the Arkansas Intercollegiate League that the school became a member of a conference. From 1937 through 1953, Arkansas State participated as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (now the National Junior College Athletic Association) (NJCAA). Because of World War II, the football program was suspended after the 1941 season and did not restart until the 1945 season. It was in 1950 that the school withdrew from the AIC, and it would stay independent of any conference affiliation for the following 12 years.

Coach Forrest England guided A-State to a semblance of regional football dominance throughout the 1950s, as seen by the team’s appearances in four post-season bowl games from 1951 to 1953. Under England’s tutelage, the Indians amassed a 48–22–9 record. At the conclusion of the 1951 season, the Indians competed in two bowl games, winning the Refrigerator Bowl and losing the Tangerine Bowl respectively (now known as the Capital One Bowl). The Indians were defeated in the 1952 Refrigerator Bowl and were tied in the 1953 Tangerine Bowl. I

Arkansas State became a member of the NCAA in 1953 and competed as a member of the College Division from 1953 to 1972. A number of short-term head coaches presided over the team throughout the early half of this period, which resulted in unimpressive results. Following the 1962 season, head coach King Block moved to Nebraska to serve as the school’s defensive line coach.

Bennie Ellender was moved from defensive backs coach to head coach in 1963, succeeding Block, shortly before A-State joined the Southland Conference. Ellender was the first African-American to hold the position. With a 52–20–4 record over eight seasons, Ellender was the most successful coach in school history, culminating in an unbeaten 11–0 college division national championship season in 1970. In this championship season, the Indians defeated Central Missouri State in the Pecan Bowl, marking their third consecutive bowl trip under Ellender and their third consecutive Southland Conference title. This was the Indians’ third-straight Southland Conference triumph. After the 1970 season, Ellender accepted the head football coaching post at his alma school, Tulane, and left the program.

As a result of the appointment of Bill Davidson as head coach in 1973, the Indians were allocated to the newly constituted Division II. This was their last classification for one year before being promoted to Division I in the following year. A record of 11–0 in Division I football in 1975 distinguished Arkansas State as one of just two unbeaten teams in the nation. Arkansas State is one of just four universities in the history of Division I-A (now Division I FBS) football to go undefeated while failing to win a National Championship during that span.

[a reference is required] Given that Arkansas State competed in the Southland Conference, which did not have a bowl game tied to it, the Razorbacks were not invited to participate in post-season play despite being undefeated during the regular season. It was as a consequence of this inequality that the Independence Bowl was established in Shreveport, Louisiana (though A-State has never played in the game). Davidson left the team after the 1978 season due to health concerns. Davidson has a record of 51–32–1 during his time at the helm.

Arkansas State competed in the NCAA Division I-AA (now Division I FCS) during the 1980s, compiling a 69–58–4 record and making four appearances in the playoffs, including a 48–21 loss in the national championship game to Georgia Southern in 1986. Under head coach Larry Lacewell, the Razorbacks won the national championship in 1986. Arkansas State was kicked out of the Southland Conference after the 1986 season and became an I-AA Independent after that. Lacewell departed A-State in 1989 after 11 seasons to take a position as defensive coordinator for Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee. Lacewell’s resignation occurred at a time when Arkansas State was deciding whether or not to seek admission to what is now known as Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
