Las Vegas Raiders Biography and Career:

Nevada-based American professional gridiron football club headquartered in Las Vegas competes in the National Football League. The Raiders are a member of the National Football League (NFL). They have three Super Bowl triumphs (1977, 1981, and 1984), one American Football League (AFL) championship (1967), and four American Football Conference (AFC) championships to their credit.

The Raiders, who are often regarded as the “villains” of the NFL due to their long history of the violent play, exemplify the mantra created by longtime owner Al Davis: “Just win, baby.” The Raiders were one of the eight founding clubs of the American Football League (AFL), having been established in 1960. Following three consecutive losing seasons, the organization recruited Davis in 1963 to act as both head coach and general manager of the team.

He instituted a “vertical” passing approach, which focused on deep passes downfield to stretch the opposing defense and soon transformed the squad into a legitimate competitor in the league. A three-month term as the American Football League’s commissioner followed by Davis becoming a part-owner of the Raiders in 1966. He gradually acquired control of the franchise by purchasing (and in some instances driving out) the other owners, until taking entire control of the team in 1976.

The Raiders won the AFL title in December 1967 with an offense led by quarterback Daryle Lamonica and center Jim Otto, a triumph that propelled the franchise to its first Super Bowl appearance the following January (a loss to the Green Bay Packers). The Raiders recruited John Madden as their head coach in 1969, and under his leadership, the club rose to prominence, producing successive winning seasons during Madden’s 10-year career with the team and winning the franchise’s first Super Bowl (1977).

It was during this period that the Raiders developed a reputation as a team of tough, no-holds-barred players—including future Hall of Famers Jim Otto, Gene Upshaw, and Art Shell; linebacker Ted (“the Stork”) Hendricks; defensive end Ben Davidson; and cornerback Willie Brown—who were not afraid to cross the line into dirty play on occasion.

Those teams also had a trio of future Hall of Fame players in the tight end Dave Casper, kicker George Blanda, and wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff, as well as feisty quarterback Ken (“the Snake”) Stabler, who was a standout performer in his own right. In 1981, Tom Flores (who had been the Raiders’ first starting quarterback) led the club to another Super Bowl triumph, this time against the New England Patriots.

Since the 1980s, Davis has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the circumstances of the Raiders’ home stadium, which led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding pledging that the team will relocate to Los Angeles. The NFL attempted to prevent the relocation, but Davis was successful in a historic antitrust case against the league in 1982, and the Raiders moved immediately.

A Super Bowl championship in 1984 capped off the team’s first four seasons in Los Angeles, during which they qualified for the playoffs in each of those seasons. The teams of the 1980s included three future Hall of Famers—running back Marcus Allen, defensive lineman Howie Long, and cornerback Mike Haynes—as well as multisport star Bo Jackson, who succeeded in both Major League Baseball and the NFL during his time with the organization.

Davis was dissatisfied with the stadium in Los Angeles over the years, and he relocated the club to Oakland, California, in 1995. The Raiders struggled in the years after their second relocation, but they were propelled to the Super Bowl in 2003 by a potent offense led by quarterback Rich Gannon and wide receivers Tim Brown and Jerry Rice.

The Raiders were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the championship game. In the years 2003 to 2015, the Raiders were plagued by a lack of success on the field, questionable personnel choices, and a turbulent front office, all of which contributed to a significant erosion of the team’s reputation.

In 2016, the Raiders had a jolt of momentum, winning 12 games and qualifying for the playoffs. However, it was a brief resurgence, as the team went back to 10 defeats the next season. Jon Gruden (who had previously led the Raiders from 1998 to 2001) was brought back as head coach by the Oakland Raiders in 2018, giving him the longest and costliest coaching deal in NFL history.

However, the club went 4–12 in his first season as head coach. After years of fruitless discussions with the city of Oakland over prospective stadium modifications or the construction of a new facility, the club was forced to move to Las Vegas in 2020.
