Minnesota United FC Biography and Career:

Minnesota United FC is a Major League Soccer (MLS) club based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They participate in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer. The squad made their league debut in 2017, succeeding the same-named North American Soccer League (NASL) franchise.

McGuire has voiced a desire to build an outdoor soccer stadium with 18,500 seats in downtown Minneapolis, near the Minneapolis Farmers Market. At the time of the club’s formation, the league did not specify a timeline for the stadium proposal but said that it was trying to complete one by July 1, 2015, the league’s deadline. Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota has declared that he would oppose a publicly financed stadium but would not oppose ancillary money for infrastructure projects.

The ownership estimated a $250 million cost for the stadium in an April 2015 proposal: $100 million for the MLS expansion fee, $30 million for site acquisition, and $120 million for construction. The ownership group met with Governor Dayton and other state government representatives to outline the plan.

The organization sought a $3 million sales tax exemption on construction materials, as well as reductions or exemptions on municipal and county property taxes on the stadium site. The tax benefits might total about $50 million.

The next day, Mayor Hodges expressed her objection to the sales tax and property tax exemptions, citing the fact that, unlike previous stadiums in Minneapolis that have received equivalent benefits, Minnesota United’s stadium would be privately owned.

The following week, the Minnesota Senate voted 61–4 to prohibit the stadium from receiving any state funds or tax expenditures, though the vote was described as “largely symbolic” because McGuire had not requested state funds and the bill would not preclude the team from seeking city or county funds.

On March 25, 2015, Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber announced the addition of Minnesota United as the league’s 23rd club and awarded the franchise to a consortium led by McGuire. Among the other sports owners in the Minneapolis-St. They outbid owners of the Minnesota Vikings, Mark, and Zygi Wilf. Garber said that Minnesota will begin to play in 2017 or 2018 – if Los Angeles FC is unable to compete in 2017.

The Minnesota Legislature passed a bill in May 2012 for a new NFL stadium scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. Mayor Betsy Hodges of Minneapolis also endorsed the Wilfs’ proposal, and Minnesota Senator Tom Bakk called Major League Soccer to inform them that the state government would not finance a soccer-specific stadium.

Commissioner Garber stated, however, that the league preferred “outdoor, soccer-specific stadiums with 20,000 seats that play on grass” over larger, covered venues with artificial turfs, such as U.S. Bank Stadium, and McGuire received support from Hennepin County Commissioner Mike Opat and at least three members of the Minneapolis City Council.

Minnesota United’s mascot is PK, a loon. Since the club’s inception in mid-2014, PK has acted as its mascot. The Dark Clouds and True North Elite are Minnesota United FC’s principal fan groups, however, the overarching organization “MNWonderwall” also includes the Red Loons and Dark Glitterati. In early 2019, Wonderwall launched “THUNDERBALL,” a coalition drumline permanently attached to Allianz Field that provides percussion on match days to stimulate screams in the Wonderwall area. Minnesota United supporters shout the Oasis song “Wonderwall” after each home victory.

Prior to the 2019 season, MNUFC added F.C. After five away matches to begin the 2019 season, MNUFC hosted its first match at the new Allianz Field on April 13, drawing 3–3 with New York City FC. At home, the club won ten games, drew six, and lost two.

The club had a strong showing in the 2019 U.S. MNUFC finished fourth in the Western Conference, despite a late-season surge to second. As a result, the club has been granted automatic qualification for the 2020 Leagues Cup. On October 20, MNUFC hosted the LA Galaxy in their first Major League Soccer playoff match, which finished 2–1.

At the season’s conclusion, two players received league-wide honors. Ike Opara was named Major League Soccer Defender of the Year for the second consecutive year in 2019. Vito Mannone was named the 2019 Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year after posting 11 shutouts and surrendering only 43 goals.

Darwin Quintero was traded to the Houston Dynamo at the end of the 2019 season for midfielder Marlon Hairston and $600,000 in allocation money. Minnesota United acquired Tyler Miller (soccer) from Los Angeles FC in a transaction when goalkeeper Vito Mannone’s loan contract ended. MNUFC recruited a number of players on loan from Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield before the season, including striker Luis Amarilla.

The Loons opened the 2020 season with two convincing away victories over the Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes in March, however, Major League Soccer postponed the season for 30 days before extending it indefinitely due to the COVID-19 virus.

The 2020 season began in July in Orlando, Florida, with the league’s MLS is Back Tournament, which included 24 of the league’s 26 teams. The month-long tournament included both a group stage that counted toward regular-season standings and a knockout stage. The Loons finished second in Group D with one win and two ties. MNUFC defeated the Columbus Crew 1–1 on penalties and the San Jose Earthquakes 4–1 in the elimination stage before losing in the tournament semifinal against Orlando City SC.

The 2020 season resumed regular match play after the event, with an 18-match schedule concluding on November 8. The Loons continued to add players, with midfielder Emanuel Reynoso joining from Boca Juniors as a Designated Player and veteran forward Kei Kamara joining through trade from the Colorado Rapids.

During the regular season, MNUFC finished fourth in the MLS Western Conference. The Loons lost 3–2 to the Seattle Sounders FC in the 2020 Western Conference final, which was again played on the road.
