NC State Wolfpack football Biography and Career:
The North Carolina State Wolfpack football team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the American football sport. This team represents North Carolina State University in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) (ACC). Prior to entering the ACC in 1953, the Wolfpack competed as a member of the Southeastern Conference (now the Big South). During its time as a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Wolfpack has won seven conference titles and competed in 31 bowl games, winning 17 of them, including eight of their past eleven. Dave Doeren is the head coach of NC State.
Carter–Finley Stadium has served as the Wolfpack’s home stadium since its construction in 1966. On September 16, 2010, North Carolina State University reinstated the practice of having a live mascot on the field during football games. On that day in Raleigh, a wolf-like Tamaskan Dog called “Tuffy” appeared on the sidelines for the Wolfpack’s game against Cincinnati, and Tuffy hasn’t missed a Wolfpack football game at Carter–Finley Stadium since then.
On March 12, 1892, the North Carolina State University (then known as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) hosted its inaugural football game versus a team from the Raleigh Male Academy, which is now known as Pullen Park. Perrin Busbee was the squad’s first head coach, and he was in charge of the team for that particular game. In front of more than 200 spectators, the Aggies defeated the Tigers 12–6 in their home colors of blue and pink. The next year, the institution competed in its first intercollegiate game, winning 12–6 against Tennessee College in Nashville.
Beginning on October 12, 1894, with a 44–0 UNC win in Charlotte, the program’s long-standing rivalry with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was officially established. Eight days later, the squad (then known as the Farmers) was defeated 16–0 by the University of North Carolina in Raleigh. In 1895, the team ended 2–2–1 under the guidance of third-year coach Bart Gatling, and the club donned red and white clothes for the first time. Over the following five seasons, the program attempted to establish itself, but just one season ended in victory during that time span. Since 1933, the football team has exclusively had scholarship football players; previous to then, all Wolfpack sports were comprised completely of non-scholarship student-athletes, including the basketball team.
The Farmers tried their first forward pass in a game against Randolph-Macon in Raleigh in 1906, a move that had just recently been legal and was still considered a “trick” play at the time. It was a successful effort, and the Farmers went on to win the game. The next season was the most successful in the program’s history. South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion Alabama and Mississippi State won the title with a 6–0–1 record under coach Mickey Whitehurst. During that season, the program also achieved its first-ever win against the University of Virginia. The Farmers played their home games on campus at the New Athletic Park, which would eventually be renamed Riddick Stadium, for the remainder of the season. Several games were played at the state fairgrounds in addition to Pullen Park prior to the completion of the new stadium’s construction.
With a record of 4–0–2 in the South Atlantic championship game in 1910, the squad was led by coach Edward Green to its second title. During that season, a victory against Virginia Tech in Norfolk was labeled the “greatest game ever played in the Southern United States.” Coach Green guided the squad to their third conference title in 1913, with a 6–1 record. North Carolina State University’s first season under the name North Carolina State University was cut short in 1918 owing to the United States’ entry into World War I and a serious flu epidemic on campus. This was the school’s first season with the new name. As a result, the roster was cut to eight players, the team’s schedule was trimmed to four games, and practice was banned for five weeks in October and November.
State College, as the institution was known at the time, was crushed 128–0 by Georgia Tech in Atlanta, less than a week after practice commenced. Coach Tal Stafford was the winning coach. John Ripple, a defensive tackle, was awarded the program’s first All-American. After a 14-year absence, the Farmers were reunited with North Carolina for the start of the next season on October 23. The Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils 13–12 in Raleigh. For the first time, A&M beat the rival Tar Heels in 1920, which was a decade after the school’s founding.
State College started wearing red sweaters in 1921, and the team became known as the Wolfpack when the local media dubbed them as such. During that season, the team, which was coached by coach Harry Hartsell at the time, entered the Southern League. Six seasons later, under coach Gus Tebell, the program won the conference championship, ending the season with a 9–1 record. Jack McDowall, a running back, was the team’s most valuable player that season. The Wolfpack beat High Point University, 37–0, in the team’s first-ever night game during the 1930 season, which was the first time that field lighting was installed at Riddick Stadium.
Williams Newton took over as head coach of the State University football team in 1937, and the squad went 24–39–6 during his tenure as head coach. A ground-oriented, hard-nose approach was utilized by State under Newton in order to put pressure on the opponent’s interior lines. Recruitment proved tough for at least part of his term as head coach since World War II mandated the conscription of all eligible males over the age of 18 into the United States military. Newton resigned from his post as head football coach at North Carolina State after seven seasons to assume the same position at South Carolina.
