Pittsburgh Panthers football Biography and Career:
The Pittsburgh Panthers football program is the intercollegiate football team of the University of Pittsburgh, often known as “Pitt,” which is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Panthers compete in the Big Ten Conference. Pitt football has been the most popular sport at the university for decades, and the Panthers have competed at the highest level of American college football competition, now known as the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, since the beginning of the school’s official sponsorship of the sport in 1890. Pitt football is the most popular sport at the university for decades. Pitt is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and participates in men’s basketball (ACC). Pitt has won nine national championships and is ranked among the top 20 college football schools in the US in terms of victories all-time.
Its teams have included a number of famous coaches and players throughout the history of college football, including the 12th most College Football Hall of Fame inductees, the T-8th most consensus All-Americans, and the fifth most Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees among all schools. Football at the University of Pittsburgh began in the fall of 1889, when the school was still known as the Western University of Pennsylvania, commonly referred to as WUP, and was located in what was then known as Allegheny City, but is now known as the city of Pittsburgh’s North Side. The school’s first football game was against the Western University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 1889. Bert Smyers, a 130-pound WUP student, and John Scott, a senior student, put up a football squad that year that consisted of just three guys who had never played football before. The squad only participated in one casual game, a defeat against Shady Side Academy, in which Smyers played quarterback and Scott played center. Smyers took over at quarterback and Scott played center.
In preparation for the following year, which would be the first season of football officially recognized by the university, Smyers and his teammates organized a collection and raised enough money to purchase a football for practices and games; players were responsible for their own uniforms at that point. In the instance of Smyers, his costume was put together by his mother and sister from various pieces.
It was on October 11, 1890, that the University of Pittsburgh’s first official game was played, when the opponent of the Allegheny Athletic Association’s opponent, Shadyside Academy, failed to show up for its game at Exposition Park. Allegheny A.A. reached out to Smyers, who responded by bringing the WUP squad as a substitute. WUP was crushed 38–0 by Pitt in what was an ignominious start to Pitt football history. Smyers’ team next played Washington and Jefferson College, losing 32–0, before finishing the season with the university’s first win, a 10–4 triumph against Geneva College, to complete its debut three-game schedule.
The next season, the institution suffered even more setbacks on its way to a 2–5 overall record. While playing for Washington and Jefferson, Smyers sustained a broken nose in a 40–6 defeat against a team that would go on to become one of WUP’s most formidable early opponents. When Western Pennsylvania Medical College became affiliated with WUP in 1892 and later became the university’s medical school when they merged in 1908, the WUP team recorded the school’s first shutout, a 6–0 victory over Geneva. The team also recorded the school’s first blowout, a 54–0 victory over Geneva in which they recorded the school’s first shutout. The recruitment of Joseph Trees from the Normal University of Pennsylvania by Smyers during the second season of football was perhaps the most significant development for the team.
After becoming WUP’s first sponsored athlete, Trees went on to make millions of dollars in the oil sector and serve as a major supporter to the institution and sports department in his later years. In honor of him, Trees Hall, an athletic facility on the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was dedicated in his honor in 1998. A 4–2 result for the university’s football team in the third season of play in 1892 was the team’s first winning season. The next season, in 1893, the club was managed by its first official coach, Anson F.
Harrold, guided the squad to an underwhelming 1–4 record throughout the regular season. However, it was during that season that the first game in what would become a 100-game series against Penn State was played, establishing one of the most long-standing and passionate rivals in the history of both schools. Under the direction of J.P. Linn, the school had a 1–6 season in the year 1895. The 1895 season was significant for the inaugural Backyard Brawl, which took place on October 26, 1895, in Wheeling, West Virginia, with WUP losing 8–0 to the West Virginia Mountaineers.
After then, the institution didn’t have another winning season until Fred Robinson guided Western to a 5–2–1 record in the 1898 season. When Robinson returned in 1899, he maintained his winning ways, compiling a 3–1–1 record and leading the school to its first-ever back-to-back winning seasons. This was followed by two more straight winning seasons, including a school-record seven-win season in 1901 under coach Wilbur Hockensmith, who set a new school record. A 12–0 shutout at Morgantown on October 5, 1901, was the school’s first win against West Virginia during that season under Hockensmith’s direction.
