Priti Patel Biography and Career:

Priti Sushil Patel (born 29 March 1972) is a British politician who has served as Home Secretary since 2019. She was first elected to the position in 2015. Judith Slaughter is a Conservative Party politician who served as Secretary of State for International Development from 2016 and 2017. Since 2010, Patel has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Witham. Her political ideology is that of the right-wing of the Conservative Party, and she believes herself to be a supporter of Margaret Thatcher.

Patel was born in London to a family of Ugandan and Indian descent. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Keele University and the University of Essex, respectively. Following the example of Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, she became active with the Referendum Party before deciding to join the Conservative Party. She spent many years working as a public relations consultant for the company Weber Shandwick before deciding to pursue a career in politics.

The new Conservative leader David Cameron suggested Patel for the party’s “A-List” of potential parliamentary candidates after she ran unsuccessfully in the Nottingham North seat at the 2005 general election. She was first elected to the House of Commons in 2010 for Witham, a newly created constituency in Essex, and was subsequently re-elected in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Patel served as Minister of State for Employment in David Cameron’s administration, and he also served as vice-chair of the Conservative Friends of Israel group. Her socially conservative beliefs have garnered her a great deal of attention.

Pritam Patel, a long-time Eurosceptic, was a prominent voice in the Vote Leave campaign for Brexit during the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union. The next day, Patel endorsed Theresa May’s campaign to become Conservative leader, and May later named Patel Secretary of State for International Development. As a result of a political crisis in 2017 involving illegal contacts with the Government of Israel, which violated the Ministerial Code, Patel was forced to step down from her position as International Development Secretary. She was appointed Home Secretary in July 2019 when Boris Johnson was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Following graduation, Patel was hired as an intern at Conservative Central Office (now known as Conservative Campaign Headquarters), having been chosen by Andrew Lansley as a result of his performance (then Head of the Conservative Research Department). Patel served as the publicity secretary for the Referendum Party, a single-issue Eurosceptic political party, from 1995 to 1997.

Patel left the Labour Party in 1997 to work for the Conservative Party when he was given a position in the press office of new Conservative leader William Hague, where he dealt with media relations in London and the South East of England. Patel was quoted in an article in the Financial Times in August 2003, in which the newspaper claimed that “racial attitudes” lingered inside the Conservative Party and that “there’s a great deal of prejudice around”. Patel responded to the Financial Times’ piece by noting that her words had been misunderstood as implying that she had been barred from running for the party’s nomination because of her ethnicity.

Patel left the Conservative Party in 2000 to work as a public relations consultant for Weber Shandwick, a public relations consulting business. An investigation reported by The Guardian in May 2015 revealed that Patel was one of seven Weber Shandwick workers who worked on a large account for British American Tobacco (BAT), which was handled by the agency.

The team was entrusted with assisting BAT in managing the company’s public image amid the issue surrounding the Burma plant being utilized as a source of revenue by the country’s military regime, as well as the terrible treatment of factory employees. The crisis was finally resolved in 2003 when BAT announced its withdrawal from Burma. After that, the story quoted certain BAT workers who expressed their belief that, although the bulk of Weber Shandwick staff was uncomfortable working with them, Patel’s group was rather calm. In addition, the paper cited internal records that said that a component of Patel’s work included lobbying MEPs against EU cigarette restrictions. She worked with Weber Shandwick for three years in various capacities.

Patel subsequently worked in corporate communications for Diageo, a British multinational alcoholic drinks corporation, between 2003 and 2007, where he remained until his retirement in 2007. She joins Weber Shandwick in 2007 as Director of Corporate and Public Affairs practices, where she has worked since. According to a news statement from Diageo, Patel has “worked on worldwide public policy concerns connected to the broader effect of alcohol on society” throughout her tenure there.
