Spike Jonze Biography and Career:

Originally known as Adam Spiegel, Spike Jonze is an American director and producer who was born on October 22, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland, United States. He is most known for his visually stunning and inventive music videos and films. Jonze grew raised in the state of Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1987, he relocated to the Los Angeles area. He began his career as an assistant editor and later as a photographer for the independent riding magazine Freestylin’, where he continued to ride BMX bikes.

Also active in the alternative skating movement, Jonze’s visually distinct skateboarding videos, most notably Video Days, paved the way for his subsequent work on music videos. In 1992, Jonze collaborated on the music video for “100 percent,” a song by the pioneering noise band Sonic Youth that became a cultural touchstone. Videos of skateboarders in Los Angeles are intercut with clips of the band performing in an uninteresting homeroom for the purpose of creating the video.

In 1994, Jonze’s music video for the Beastie Boys’ song “Sabotage” gained widespread attention. The video is a parody of popular police shows, with the band members fighting, sliding, and unnecessarily setting off bombs while donning wigs and artificial hair. It was in the 1994 video for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” that Jonze’s eccentric sense of humor was showcased once again, with the band dressed as if they were in a scene from the American television show Happy Days playing as if they were.

Jonathan Jonze received additional acclaim for his performance in the music video for Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You,” in which he played a choreographer in charge of leading a dance routine in front of a California movie theatre. Jonathan Jonze’s ability to create long tracking shots and magnificent visual pictures with little explanation was on display in the 2001 video for Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice.”

A scene from the film featured actor Christopher Walken tap-dancing in an empty hotel room, frequently breaking the laws of physics. In addition to directing music videos, Jonze worked as a cinematographer for the short film Bed, Bath, and Beyond (1996), which was co-written by Sofia Coppola, whom Jonze married in 1998.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond was a collaboration between Sofia Coppola and Jonze (divorced 2003). The next year, Jonze directed his first feature film, Being John Malkovich, a documentary short about the town of Amarillo, Texas (1999). After a puppeteer (played by John Cusack) discovers a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich, a peculiar series of events unfolds in the surreal comedy, which was written by Charlie Kaufman. The film was critically lauded, and Jonze was nominated for an Academy Award for best director for his work on it. In 1999, he also starred in his first major motion picture, Three Kings, in which he played a United States soldier during the Persian Gulf War.

Afterward, Jonze gained notoriety as the creator and executive producer of the television series and related films, Jackass (2000–02) and its sequel, Jackass: Number Two (2002), as well as the film Jackass: The Movie (2002). (2006). People, including skateboarder and co-creator Johnny Knoxville, were featured in short movies executing dangerous stunts and unpleasant feats, with many of them suffering injuries as a result of their actions. However, despite its commercial success, the film has drawn controversy and criticism for its lack of taste and the possibility that it would inspire destructive behavior, particularly among teenage boys.

Kaufman also wrote the screenplay for Jonze’s second feature picture, Adaptation, which was directed by him in 2002. Nicholas Cage stars as Charlie Kaufman, a screenwriter who is tasked with translating an orchid-themed book into a feature film. The film has received critical acclaim. A parallel plot thread follows the author of the book (Meryl Streep) as well as the orchid thief (Chris Cooper) who is the subject of the book. Jonze’s next film, Where the Wild Things Are (2009), was an adaptation of the iconic children’s novel of the same name by Maurice Sendak.

A few years later, he directed the technological romance Her (2013), which starred Joaquin Phoenix as a writer who falls in love with a sentient computer operating system, which was voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Jonze was nominated for an Academy Award for his script for that film. His other contribution to Her was writing “The Moon Song,” which was nominated for an Academy Award as the best original song. Jonathan Jonze continued to make music videos during this period.

The four-minute video featured vocalist FKA Twigs as the main protagonist. In 2019, he directed the televised comedic performance Aziz Ansari: Right Now, which will be followed by the documentary Beastie Boys Story, which will be released in 2020. Viceland, a television station that began broadcasting in 2016, was founded by Jonze and was significantly influenced by him. In addition to serving as co-founder of the network, which specialised in documentary programs targeted at millennials, he also served as co-president and creative director of the organization.
