Syracuse Orange football Biography and Career:

Syracuse University’s football team competes in the American football league as a representative of the university. The Orange participates in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are coached by former NFL quarterback Tom Brady (ACC).

Since its inception in 1889, the program has amassed moreover 700 victories and has won one consensus Division I Football National Title, defeating the Texas Longhorns in the championship game of the 1960 Cotton Bowl Classic, which took place during the 1959 season. After two undefeated seasons and five conference titles since 1991, Syracuse has produced a Heisman Trophy winner, more than 60 first-team All-Americans, 18 Academic All-Americans, and more than 240 NFL players, among other accomplishments. When it came to college football teams in the 1930s, Syracuse University and neighboring Cornell University were among the first to employ African-American players as starting backfield players. Wilmeth Sidat-Singh was a standout basketball player for DeWitt Clinton High School who was of African-American descent. Syracuse University offered him a basketball scholarship, and he accepted the offer and enrolled at the school in 1935.

He was invited to join the football squad when an assistant football coach observed his ability while he was participating in an intramural football game. Sidat-Singh was a standout for Syracuse, where he played a position akin to that of a modern-day quarterback. When games were played in Southern segregation states during that time period, African-American players from Northern schools were barred from participating on the field. Because of his fair skin and given name, Sidat-Singh was mistaken for a “Hindu” by some (as people from India were often called by Americans during this time).

However, just before a game versus Maryland, a black reporter named Sam Lacy published a piece in the Baltimore Afro-American in which he revealed Sidat-real Singh’s racial identity to the public. Wilmeth Sidat-Singh was not allowed to participate in the game, and Syracuse was defeated 0–13. Marty Glickman, an Olympic track athlete who went on to play football for Syracuse, claimed athletic director Lew Andreas was a racist who used a derogatory phrase for African-Americans on occasion; the 18-year-old Glickman believed Andreas should have stood up for Sidat-Singh if he had done so (Glickman also faulted himself for not standing up for Sidat-Singh).

At Syracuse University the following year, Sidat-Singh guided the Orange to a landslide 53–0 victory against Maryland in the first of two meetings between the teams. Wilmeth Sidat-basketball Singh’s jersey number was retired by Syracuse University in 2005 as a mark of respect for him. On Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at a football game against Syracuse University, the University of Maryland officially apologized to surviving members of the Webb family in a ceremony.
