TCU Horned Frogs football Biography and Career:

In the United States, the TCU Horned Frogs football team represents Texas Christian University in college football competition (TCU). Frogs participate in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), which is the highest level of college sports sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. The Horned Frogs are a member of the Big 12 Conference.

The Horned Frogs have been a member of the Big 12 Conference since 2012, having previously been a member of the Mountain West Conference (MWC), Western Athletic Conference (WAC), Conference USA (C-USA), Southwest Conference (SWC), and Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA)

Founded in 1896, Texas Christian University (TCU) has won two national titles in football: in 1935 and 1938. One former TCU player, Davey O’Brien, was the winner of the Heisman Trophy, and the school has had eight former players elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. Home games for the Horned Frogs are held at Amon G. Carter Stadium, which is situated on the University of Texas at Arlington campus in Fort Worth.

TCU is ranked as the fourth finest private college football program in history, after only Notre Dame, USC, and Miami-Florida. As a result, the Horned Frogs are one of just four Football Bowl Subdivision teams to have participated in all six College Football Playoff Bowls, winning all of them except the Fiesta and the Orange. TCU and head coach Gary Patterson achieved their tenth 11-win season in the program’s history in 2017, marking the first time in the program’s history. Since 2001, there have been a total of four 11-win seasons in college football, which ranks fourth overall.

After losing three games in a row in 2021, TCU sacked head coach Gary Patterson, who had spent the previous 20 years coaching at TCU. Jerry Kill will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2021–2022 season. TCU’s inaugural season of football began on December 7, 1896, at which time the school was known as AddRan Christian University.

TCU did not change its name until 1902. TCU won its first game ever played by defeating Toby’s Business College by a score of 8–6 and did it without the use of any substitutes. Texas Christian University concluded the 1896 season with a record of 2-1-1, before improving to 3-1 the next year. For the first few years of its existence, the University was situated in Waco, Texas, until relocating to Fort Worth in 1910, where it was established.

During the period prior to entering the Southwest Conference in 1923, TCU had a 165–15–0 record. This season, TCU finished 8–1–0 with 230 points scored against only 53 points allowed throughout the course of the whole year. TCU earned its first conference championship in 1920 while competing as a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA). After posting a 9–1–0 record, the Horned Frogs won a berth in the Fort Worth Classic, better known as the Dixie Bowl, where they will face Centre College. Despite the fact that the game was played in Fort Worth, the Centre came out on top 63–7.

TCU had a 5-game winning run during its first season in the SWC in 1923, however, the team finished with a 2–1–0 conference record and a 5–4–0 overall record that season. This included a 40–21 defeat against TCU’s rising rival, the SMU Mustangs, who went 9–0 on their way to winning the Big 12 title that season. In the next season, TCU finished second in the conference with a 5–1 SWC record and an overall record of 5–2.

The Horned Frogs were able to right the ship after two successful seasons. Prior to 1923, TCU’s football team experienced a rotating door of coaches, with no one serving as head coach for more than two years at a time. Following its admission to the SWC, the school developed a high degree of stability, hiring just four coaches over the course of the following 43 years, and would not finish worst in the league again until 1953. Under the guidance of those four coaches (Bell, Schmidt, Meyer, and Martin), the TCU football team had a 262–165–30 record.

Matty Bell, who took over as head coach of the TCU Frogs in 1923, had his greatest season in 1928, which also happened to be his last season in the position. The only defeats that season came at home against the Baylor Bears (7–6) and to Texas (6–0) respectively. The Frogs finished second in the league that year with an overall record of 8–2–0 and a conference record of 3–2 in conference play.

The 1929 season was the first season under Coach Francis Schmidt, as well as TCU’s first SWC championship. The championship was won against SMU in the last game of the season on November 30, 1929, to conclude the season. TCU had a one-point lead over SMU in the league standings going into the game. TCU finished with four victories, while SMU finished with a 3–0–1 record in the league. A victory or a draw for TCU would give them their first SWC championship as this was their final conference matchup of the season for both squads.

SMU quarterback Bob Gilbert completed a 16-yard throw to Weldon “Speedy” Mason in the third quarter for a 40-yard gain, capping an otherwise scoreless first half. Following the extra point, the Mustangs had a 7–0 lead. TCU did not score until the fourth quarter when they were on the SMU 1-yard line for the second time.

The game-tying touchdown was scored by TCU quarterback Howard Grubbs, who outran All-SWC fullback Harlos Green and Mike Brumbelow to get the ball in the end zone. The Frogs gave SMU plenty of time to respond to their touchdown, but Grubbs, who was now on defense, intercepted Gilbert’s pass and ended up with the turnover. When the time expired, TCU was able to force a tie and claim its first SWC championship.
