Toronto FC Biography and Career:
The Toronto Football Team (often known as Toronto FC) is a Canadian professional soccer club situated in the city of Toronto, Ontario. The team is a member of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS) and participates in the league. The team’s home games are held at BMO Field, which is situated at Exhibition Place on Toronto’s lakeshore, just west of downtown. Toronto FC became the first Canadian-based club in Major League Soccer when it entered the league as an expansion team in 2007.
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment owns and runs the Toronto FC II USL League One affiliate club, as well as the majority of other professional sports teams in the city, including the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts (CFL).

According to the media and the team, the team is referred to as “TFC” and “the Reds.” The initials “FC” in the club’s name became the standard initialism for football teams after that.
Although the club’s existence started with a lengthy scoreless skid, Toronto FC rapidly established itself as a team with substantial fan support as the season progressed. It was on May 12, 2007, at BMO Field, that the club earned its first victory when Danny Dichio scored the team’s first goal in the 24th minute in a 3–1 home victory over the Chicago Fire. Despite finishing last in the Major League Soccer standings with a 6–17–7 record, Toronto FC laid the groundwork for its future as the league’s first Canadian franchise.
Toronto FC hosted the 2008 Major League Soccer All-Star Game during the club’s second season in 2008. For the purpose of determining which team would represent the Canadian Soccer Association in the CONCACAF Champions League, Toronto FC participated in the first-ever Canadian Championship in 2008, fighting for the Voyageurs Cup. When Greg Sutton was injured, rookie goalkeeper Stefan Frei stepped in and rapidly established himself as a fan favorite in his first season.
Throughout the season, TFC only managed to score two goals in the last 15 minutes of games (last in MLS). It was also during the same 15-minute stretch that they conceded 16 goals (the highest in Major League Soccer history), which resulted in a 14-goal disparity over the last 15 minutes.
On November 27, 2012, it was reported that Kevin Payne will be leaving his role as general manager of D.C. United to take up the same position at Toronto FC. Mariner was replaced as head coach on January 7, 2013, by Ryan Nelsen, who was formerly an assistant coach. Matas Laba, the first young designated player in Major League Soccer, was signed by Payne on April 25, 2013.
On July 9, Payne made headlines when he controversially moved Luis Silva to D.C. United in exchange for an unknown sum of allocation funds. Payne was sacked by the club on September 4. As a result of the player trade, Toronto obtained American Jozy Altidore from Sunderland on the same day as the first half. Three days later, the club announced the signing of Italian international Sebastian Giovinco from Juventus, who would earn $7 million per year.
Following the resignation of Bezbatchenko as general manager during the 2018–19 off-season, on January 4, 2019, Toronto FC announced the hiring of Ali Curtis as the club’s new general manager. Toronto FC traded Giovinco to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal on January 30, 2019, after failing to reach a contract deal with the club. The transfer amount was not revealed at the time.
Alejandro Pozuelo, a Spaniard, signed a contract with Toronto FC on March 4, 2019, as a designated player to assist replace the vacuum created by the recent departures of Sebastian Giovinco and compatriot Vázquez in the creative midfield position.
