UNLV Rebel’s football Biography and Career:

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Rebels football program is a Division I collegiate football program that represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Members of the Mountain West League, which is a Division I Bowl Subdivision (previously Division I-A) conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, represent the Mountaineers on the field (NCAA). The program, which was established on September 14, 1968, is based in Paradise, Nevada, where it plays its home games at Allegiant Stadium.

On September 14, 1968, Nevada Southern University announced that they will field a college football team for the first time. They also revealed that the team would be a Division II Independent and that Bill Ireland would be the team’s first head coach. The St. Mary’s Gaels were the opponents for the Rebels’ first game of their debut season, which took place at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. In front of 8,000 spectators, the Rebels defeated the Gaels 27–20 in the championship game. The Rebels remained unbeaten until their last game of the season, when they were upset by the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 13–17, to end their debut season with an 8–1 overall record. When they faced their first in-state foe, Nevada, the Rebels were defeated 28–30. The next year, they played their first game versus the Wolf Pack.

Next to that, UNLV took vengeance by beating Nevada 42–30 the following year, marking the first time the Fremont Cannon had been given out. The Rebels played their first game against a Division I opponent on September 25, 1971, when they took on Utah State of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA). They were defeated 7–27. The Rebels played Weber State on October 23, 1971, in the first game at their new stadium, Las Vegas Stadium, and lost 17–30. Ireland announced his resignation after the conclusion of the 1972 season, when the Rebels finished with a poor 1–10 record, leaving the team with a 26–23–1 record.

In 1973, Ireland was replaced by Ron Meyer, and Meyer guided the Rebels back to powerhouse status with an 8–3 record, including their first win against a big college opponent, defeating Marshall 31–9. Ireland was replaced by Ron Meyer before the start of the 1974 season. Running back Mike Thomas, who finished with 1,741 yards and nine school records while competing for the Division II national rushing title, was named the Rebels’ first All-American. The Rebels have had an outstanding season, breaking into the national Division II top-10 and earning their first All-American.

The Rebels’ success continued in 1974, when they went unbeaten for the first time in school history, completing 11–0 and finished second in the national Division II polls, the highest position that any Rebels football team has ever achieved. The Rebels advanced to their first postseason appearance in a national quarterfinal matchup against Alcorn State, beating the Braves 35–22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The spectacular season of the Rebels came to an end in the national semifinals of the Grantland Rice Bowl when they were defeated by Delaware 11–49. When Meyer departed the team in 1976, he went on to become the head coach at SMU, which was a college powerhouse.

Tony Knap, a former Boise State coach, took over as head coach of the Rebels in 1976 when Ron Meyer was fired. In his first season, Knap was able to build on the Rebels’ previous success under Meyer, leading them to a 9–3 record, a 7th-place national rating, and participation in the Division II playoffs, where they were defeated by Akron 6–27 in the national quarterfinals. Having spent 10 years as an independent at the Division II level, the program made the transition to the Division I level in 1978, without the help of any particular conference affiliation. Against Washington State on September 9, the Rebels suffered their first loss as a Division I institution, falling to the Cougars 7–34. The Rebels beat Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colorado, for their first big collegiate win away from Las Vegas, a 33–6 triumph.

At the conclusion of the season, the Rebels traveled to Yokohama, Japan, where they faced off against college football powerhouse Brigham Young, which they lost 28–24. Despite a difficult finish to the season, the Rebels had a remarkable season, finishing 7–4 in their first season at the Division I level. Despite numerous accomplishments during his time as head coach at UNLV, Knap decided to leave after the 1981 season. These included the Rebels’ first appearance in the ABC Regional Game of the Week (a 21–45 loss at Wyoming), a 45–41 upset of 8th-ranked BYU in Provo, Utah, and securing the program’s 100th win (a 27–20 victory at UTEP in El Paso, Texas).
