West Virginia Mountaineers football Biography and Career:

College football’s West Virginia Mountaineers represent West Virginia University (commonly known as “WVU” or “West Virginia”) in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, located on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, serves as the home field for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers have won or shared a total of 15 conference championships, including eight Southern Conference championships and seven Big East Conference championships, over their history. Coach Neal Brown leads the Mountaineers to a Big 12 Conference championship in their first season.

The West Virginia University football program dates back to November 28, 1891, when the Mountaineers’ inaugural squad lost to Washington & Jefferson 72–0 on a field that had been converted from a cow meadow. The Mountaineers had a modest start, but they ended up with an overall record of 25-23-3 before the turn of the twentieth century, which turned out to be a successful century for Mountaineer football. In the first decade of the twentieth century, the program saw its first real success, as shown by its 7–1 and 8–1 records in the seasons 1903 and 1905.

Despite losing to Penn State, Pitt, and Michigan by a combined score of 217–0 in the 1904 season, West Virginia finished with a 6–3 record in season. Four-year head coaching tenures were enjoyed by C.A. Lueder (from 1908 to 1911) and Mont McIntire (1916–17, 1919–20), who together represented the longest coaching tenures in Mountaineer football history during this early time of the program’s history.

A total of 17–13–3 wins were recorded by Lueder’s Mountaineers, although McIntire’s teams had the greatest success of any Mountaineer team prior to 1921, accumulating a 24–11–4 record that included an 8–2 finish in 1919. Ira Errett Rodgers, a former West Virginia Mountaineer and prospective College Football Hall of Fame entrant, was a member of the same Mountaineer squad that produced the state’s first-ever consensus All-American and probable College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ira Errett Rodgers. Rodgers led the country with 147 total points in the 1919 season, scoring 19 touchdowns and kicking 33 extra points for West Virginia University. This was also the season in which Rodgers threw 11 touchdown passes, which was an unheard-of accomplishment at the time and remained a Mountaineer record until 1949.

The Mountaineers saw their first spell of success during the 1920s, which coincided with the successful coaching tenures of Clarence Spears (1921–24) and Ira Errett Rodgers (1925–30, 1943–45), who both served as head coaches. West Virginia finished the 1922 season with a 30–6–3 record under the direction of Spears, with its best result coming in the previous season. This squad, which finished with a perfect 10–0–1 record in 1922, is the only one in the history of West Virginia football to accomplish this feat. For the whole season of 1922, Spears’ Mountaineers allowed just 34 total points.

including six shutouts in a row to close off the regular season. Additionally, the 1922 season saw important victory against rival Pitt and against Gonzaga in the East-West Bowl, which was the program’s first participation in a bowl game. Russell Meredith, an offensive lineman, was named to the First Team of the American Football Coaches Association. As a mark of respect for the achievements of the 1922 season, West Virginia University initiated the construction of what would become known as Mountaineer Field.

With two more one-loss seasons in 1923 and 1924, the Mountaineers extended their winning streak to seven games before Spears left the school to join the Minnesota Vikings in 1924. In 1925, Ira Errett Rodgers took over for Spears, and the Mountaineers went 8–1 under his leadership. After finishing with a 6–4 record in 1926 and a 2–4–3 record in 1927, the program finished with an 8–2 record in 1928. [4] Rodgers’ first two seasons as head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers finished with records of 4–3–3 in 1929 and 5–5 the following year.
