Aaron Judge Biography and Career:
Aaron Judge, whose full name is Aaron James Judge and who was born on April 26, 1992, is a professional baseball player with the New York Yankees (2016–), who in 2022 broke the mark for the most home runs hit in a season in the American League. Aaron Judge now holds this record. His 62 home runs shattered the form that former Yankee Roger Maris had held for the previous 61 years. He re-signed with the New York Yankees in December 2022 after reaching an agreement on a new deal for $360 million over nine years.
Patty and Wayne Judge, both educators, adopted Judge the day after he was born, and they raised him in Linden, which is located in the state of California. Aaron Judge, who is biracial, started to wonder why he didn’t look much like his parents when he was about 10 or 11. Judge, a professional baseball player, is 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 meters) tall, weighs 282 pounds (128 kg), and is a mixture of black and white. John Judge, who was much older than him, was also a Judge and had been adopted.
Aaron Judge has been quoted as saying the following about his adoptive mother: “Some kids grow in their mom’s stomach; I grew in my mom’s heart.” Since I was a little child, she has never failed to treat me with kindness and warmth at all times. I’ve never been in a position where I needed to reconsider or question anything.”Judge was an athlete in high school, participating in football, basketball, and baseball. The University of Notre Dame and Stanford were among the schools that recruited him to play football, while other schools wanted him to play baseball and football. On the other hand, Judge concluded to focus only on baseball.
The Oakland Athletics chose Judge in the amateur portion of the Major League Baseball draft in 2010 when he was just 18 years old. However, at that time, he had already been awarded a scholarship to play baseball at California State University, Fresno (formerly known as Fresno State), also his parents’ alma mater. As a result of their encouragement, he decided to continue his studies.
Between 2011 to 2013, he was a member of the Fresno State Bulldogs baseball team until the New York Yankees selected him in the first round of the 2013 draft. Before making his debut with the Yankees in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 13, 2016, Judge spent the 2014, 2015, and 2016 seasons playing in the minor levels for different teams affiliated with the Yankees. He played the position of right fielder in that game.
Judge successfully debuted at-bat in the big leagues by hitting a home run. In his second game with the Yankees, he also blasted a home run for the team. However, the remainder of his inaugural season was marred by less than stellar performance: he batted.179, struck out 42 times in 84 at-bats, and finished the year with an oblique muscle injury. Although Judge’s 2018 and 2019 seasons were cut short by injuries, including a fractured wrist bone that he sustained after being struck by a pitch and another oblique strain, he still managed to smash 27 home runs in each.
As a result of injuries to his ribs and calves, he spent additional time on the disabled list during the 2020 season, which was cut short to just 60 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he returned to his old self, hitting 39 home runs in 148 games. This marked his return to form. Judge and the Yankees were unable to come to terms on a long-term deal for the player, who was 30 years old at the time, before the start of the 2022 season. He rejected a seven-year contract offer that would have earned him more than $213 million throughout the agreement.
Instead, he agreed to a one-year agreement for $19 million, placing his faith in the fact that he could negotiate a higher offer on the open market. In December of 2022, he negotiated a deal with the Yankees that was the biggest free-agent signing in the history of Major League Baseball. The second half of the season was dominated by speculation that Judge would break Maris’ record for most home runs hit in a season since Judge hit home runs at such a furious rate throughout the season. He blasted his 55th home run on September 7, putting him six home runs behind Maris with nearly a whole month of the season remaining to play.
On September 20, Judge became the third player in the history of the American League to smash 60 home runs in a single season, joining Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. On September 28th, he hit his 61st home run, matching Maris for the most all-time. When Judge hit his 62nd home run six days later, with just two games remaining in the regular season, he established a new single-season record for the most home runs hit in the American League. (For further information, see our note on baseball’s dubious single-season home run record.)
After the game, Judge said hitting the home run that broke the record was “a big relief.” He acknowledged that he felt pressure to break the record but added that he attempted to ruin it by telling reporters, “I tried to take it one day at a time and say a little prayer.” Judge was awarded the title of Most Valuable Player of the American League for the 2022 season as a direct consequence of his historic season. Barry Bonds, who hit 73 home runs in 2001, now holds the record for the most home runs ever hit in Major League Baseball.
However, the legitimacy of that record has been called into question due to claims that Bonds utilized steroids to enhance his performance. Baseball writers have seen clear parallels between Judge, Ruth, and Maris regarding Judge’s height and humility. Judge, whose nickname is “All Rise,” established a charity with the same name to assist in providing “youth with the tools to reach their dreams.”
