Akbar Al Baker Biography and Career:

Akbar Al Baker is a Qatari businessman who was born in India and served as the Group CEO of Qatar Airways. He was born in 1962. Additionally, he served as the Chairman of Qatar Tourism until the 22nd of October, 2023. While working for Qatar Airways Group, Al-Baker also served as the Chief Executive Officer of Hamad International Airport, which first opened its doors in 2014.

The appointment of Al-Baker as chairman of the Oneworld airline alliance took place in May of 2021. Since 1997, Al-Baker has held the position of chief executive officer of Qatar Airways. Previously, he had a position in the Civil Aviation Directorate of Qatar, which led to this assignment. As well as that, he served as the head of the Qatar Tourism Authority in the past.

Qatar Airways reportedly informed its female flight attendants in 2015 that they faced the possibility of losing their employment if they became pregnant.

On the 26th of August 2015, Qatar Airways revised its policy on marriage and pregnancy for its female cabin crew representatives. The International Labour Organization (ILO) issued a report in June urging Qatar to amend its employment laws to eliminate discrimination. In response to this recommendation, Qatar Airways has relaxed its limitations that prevent female cabin crew members from getting married and having children.

By the new contract, pregnant women will now be eligible for temporary ground employment, and they will be able to get married anytime they choose, provided that they inform the employer of their decision.
In May 2016, The Daily Telegraph published an article in which Al Baker said that Qatar does not want backpackers because they “are just there to lie on the beach and spend as little as possible.” The article also stated that Qatar sought to “attract people of higher standard.”

Al Baker made the statement that United States airlines were “crap” and that their customers were “always being served by grandmothers” in a speech that he delivered in July 2017 at a dinner in Ireland. He added that the average age of the cabin crew working for Qatar Airways was 26 years old. After some time had passed, he said that his comments may not accurately represent his “true sentiments about cabin crew.”

At a press conference held on June 5, 2018, following his election to the position of chairman of the International Air Transport Association at the annual meeting of the association held in Sydney, Australia, he stated to reporters that, regarding the management of Qatar Airways, “Of course, it has to be led by a man because it is a very challenging position.”

Even though Al-Baker subsequently expressed regret, he did not go so far as to say that he no longer holds the notion that becoming the CEO of an international airline is an extremely difficult position for a woman to hold. He said that he was trying to amuse himself during the time in question. During the year 2019, Al-Baker asserted that the Jewel at Changi Airport was a replica of the expansion plans that had been previously planned for Hamad International Airport.
