Alex Hales Biography and Career:

Alex Hales is the grandson of Dennis Hales, a superb tennis player who once pushed Rod Laver to play five sets at Wimbledon. Alex Hales is noted for his adventurous style of play on the court. In addition to carrying his 6’5″ body gracefully, he has established himself as an aggressive and astute top-order batsman.

He initially came to public attention at the juvenile age of 16 when he scored 52 runs off a single over, ending unbeaten on 114, while participating in the London County Cricket Club’s Founders Day at Lord’s in 2005, bringing him into the limelight again. Three years later, he was signed by Nottinghamshire, where he had a respectable summer of limited overs cricket before being released. In a Pro40 match against Worcestershire in 2009, he scored 150 runs off 102 balls, a personal best.

He was a member of the England Under-19 side that visited New Zealand in 2008, and he scored three half-centuries during the trip. His inclusion in the English Performance team in 2009-10 led to his selection for the England Lions for the whole of the 2011 summer tour.

Hales was the leading run-scorer for Nottinghamshire in the Friends Life T20 tournament, with 544 runs at an incredible strike rate of 147. At the conclusion of the season, he was voted the PCA young player of the year, having scored 1,000 runs in the First-Class season, which included a stunning 184 against Somerset in the last match of the season. 2012 was another good season for him, as he amassed 857 First-Class runs, including a pair of hundreds.

However, after a duck against India in his first match on the international stage, Hales bounced back with an unbeaten 62 off 48 balls against the West Indies at The Oval. During a match against the West Indies at Trent Bridge in 2012, he came within one run of a superb century and the distinction of being the first England player to achieve a T20 century, but he still managed to accumulate a match-winning 99. As England’s World Twenty20 campaign came to an end prematurely in September in Sri Lanka, he continued to play in every game for his country, scoring 124 runs in five innings until the tournament was called off due to injury. Against Australia in August 2013, he came within a whisker of striking a century in Twenty20 cricket, with an electrifying 94 off 61 balls.

The aggressive batter, who is well-known for his prowess in Twenty20 cricket, subsequently signed a contract with the Melbourne Renegades for the 2012-13 Big Bash League season. Hales took advantage of the late chance and smashed an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls in his Big Bash debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground. As a batter for Nottinghamshire and as a powerful Twenty20 player for the England team, Alex Hales has shown to be an inventive precursor of the next generation of English cricketers.

Hales has been a key member of England’s Twenty20 side for many years. He was named for the team’s tour of the West Indies in February/March 2014, and he appeared in the first two Twenty20 Internationals. Despite taking a critical knock in the second game, he was unable to assist England in securing a victory. Hales, who is ranked as the world’s best T20I batsman by the International Cricket Council, showed a taste of his power-hitting prowess at the 2014 World Twenty20, when he hammered Sri Lanka all over the field to become the first Englishman to record a T20I century. The knock also assisted his team in achieving a remarkable win in that game, and it was the only hundred in the whole tournament as a result of it.

Increasing support for the inclusion of Alex Hales in the One-Day International team grew after the opener put in some standout performances in the Twenty20 format. The opportunity finally presented itself during the home series against India, when he made his international debut in Cardiff. Despite the fact that he did not have the greatest of series, the selectors decided to keep him for the Sri Lanka trip, despite the fact that he underperformed. Despite being selected for the 2015 World Cup, he found himself at the bottom of the order as Ian Bell and Moeen Ali opened the batting for all but one of England’s games, a victory against Afghanistan in the final.

Alex Hales was a standout performer in the ‘New England’ side after England’s defeat at the 2015 World Cup and subsequent rebuild. Given permission to use his natural aggressive strokeplay, he gathered runs at the top of the order, and, in partnership with Jason Roy, he was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of his team. This contained a trophy for being named Man of the Series after scoring four straight half-centuries in South Africa. The cherry on top came in 2016, when he lit up Trent Bridge with a 171-run blitz against Pakistan as England amassed 444 runs, the best ever one-day international total.

It was well known before to the match that he was a T20 specialist with a questionable technique outside the off-stump. He did, however, make it to the Test team, but with only mediocre results in his first few appearances. During the post-Strauss period, when England was unable to settle on a reliable opening partner for Alastair Cook, Hales was one of the numerous candidates that were considered. The selectors, on the other hand, had reached the end of their patience after 11 Tests.
