Annie Leibovitz Biography and Career:

Photojournalist Anna-Lou Leibovitz, better known by her maiden name Annie Leibovitz (born October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut), is a well-known American celebrity portrait photographer. Crisp and well-lit are the defining characteristics of her work.

As a child, Leibovitz’s mother was a dancer, and her father served in the military. At the time of Leibovitz’s 1967 admission to the San Francisco Art Institute (B.F.A., 1971), the family was still residing in the Philippines. She, on the other hand, instantly fell in love with photography after attending a night class in it. John Lennon was her first commercial project for Rolling Stone magazine when she was still a college student in 1970.

As chief photographer for the magazine three years later, Annie Leibovitz focused her efforts on creating a singular portrait of modern rock music’s biggest names. In 1975, she documented the Rolling Stones’ six-month North American tour, capturing guitarist Keith Richards and lead singer Mick Jagger in images that were widely reproduced.

(She also developed a cocaine addiction, which she was able to quit after joining the staff of Vanity Fair magazine several years later.) The cover of Rolling Stone in January 1981 is a portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which is one of her best-known works from this period. Before his death, John Lennon appears nude and wrapped around his pregnant wife in a pose reminiscent of the foetus.

In 1983, Leibovitz toured Europe and the United States with a 60-print exhibition. Best-seller Annie Leibovitz: Photographs was a companion volume to the exhibit. By joining Vanity Fair that same year she expanded her subject matter to include movie stars, athletes, and politicians. Cooperation between the photographer and the subject, Leibovitz spent days observing her clients’ daily routines and worked tirelessly to produce a one-of-a-kind portrait. Dramatic and produced visuals were used in her commercials rather than casual ones.

In 1983, she was named photographer of the year by the American Society of Magazine Photographers. In 1986, she began her career as an advertising photographer, working with clients such as Honda, American Express, and the Gap. Clio Awards for advertising excellence were given to the American Express ad campaign that utilised her images in 1987. The California Milk Processor Board (the “Got Milk?” campaign) hired her to shoot a series of Disney-themed commercials for the theme parks.

For Nike’s “Make Yourself” campaign, she photographed seven of the sport’s best female competitors in 2011. All of her work has been distinguished by the attention to detail in the set design and lighting, as well as her signature use of vibrant colours. She was the first woman and only second living photographer to exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., in 1991.

In 1991, a companion book, Annie Leibovitz: Photographs 1970–1990, was published. Portraits of American Olympians she took for an exhibit at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, which were eventually published in the book Olympic Portraits, received a lot of attention (1996). A collection of her images, titled Women, was released in 1999, together with an article by her girlfriend and fellow intellectual Susan Sontag. The publication was supported by an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Women: New Portraits” was reworked by Leibovitz in 2016 and became a travelling exhibition. For the first time in history, Leibovitz was recognised by the Library of Congress as a Living Legend. Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005–2016, Annie Leibovitz at Work (2008), and A Photographer’s Life: 1990–2005, which included many pictures capturing Leibovitz’s personal life, were among the final publications of her work (2017).

In 2009, Leibovitz was sued for a $24 million debt she incurred as a result of her celebrity-saturated lifestyle and her obsessive attention to detail in her work. Later that year, her official portrait of President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle, and their kids Sasha and Malia was published to the public, which helped to shift the spotlight from her legal troubles.

Annie Leibovitz photographed Barack and Michelle Obama with their two children, Sasha (left) and Malia (right), in the White House’s Green Room in 2009.
