Arizona State Sun Devils football Biography and Career:
Arizona State University’s athletic teams are known as the Sun Devils, and they represent the university. The Arizona State University athletic department has nine men’s and eleven women’s varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Pacific-12 Conference. Baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming/diving, track, and wrestling are among the sports in which the men participate. Basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming/diving, tennis, track, volleyball, and water polo are among the sports in which women participate.
ASU athletes are referred to as “Sun Devils” because of their bright colors. The Bulldogs were the team’s mascot when it was first adopted in 1946; they were previously known as the Normals and then as the Bulldogs. Sparky, the Sun Devil mascot, was created by Bert Anthony, a former Disney artist, who previously worked for the company. The Arizona State Sun Devils’ main adversary is the University of Arizona Wildcats.
There are 23 NCAA team national championships won by ASU, including five in baseball, three in women’s tennis, one in men’s gymnastics, one in men’s track and field, one in men’s indoor track and field, one in wrestling, two in men’s golf, thirteen in women’s golf, two in softball, and one in women’s swimming and diving (seven times). A total of 133 team national championships have been won as a result of this.
ASU also boasts a large number of individual NCAA national champions in a variety of sports. The baseball team has qualified for the College World Series 22 times, the men’s basketball team has qualified for 13 NCAA tournaments, including three visits in the Elite Eight, and ASU’s football team has won the Rose Bowl in 1987 and the Fiesta Bowl five times (1971-1972-1973-1975-1982).
Among the sports in which ASU has won national titles are archery (15 times), women’s archery (21 times), mixed archery (20 times), men’s badminton (13), and mixed badminton (10) — all of which are not recognized by the NCAA. ASU has also won national titles in men’s archery, women’s archery, and mixed archery.
Between 1931 and 1961, the Sun Devils competed in the Border Conference before becoming a member of the Western Athletic Conference in 1962. An amazing 62–9 record between 1970 and 1975, led by great head coach Frank Kush, culminated in a 17–14 upset of the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Fiesta Bowl in the year 1975.
The Pacific-8 Conference was formed in 1978 when Arizona State University and the University of Arizona joined forces, resulting in the conference being renamed the Pacific-10 Conference (which grew again in 2011 to become the Pacific-12). After a series of head coaching changes, the Sun Devils had a few weak years, but they were still able to qualify for the Fiesta Bowl in 1983 and the Rose Bowl in 1987, where they won both games.
Dirk Koetter was sacked after six seasons as head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils after the 2006 season, and on December 6, 2006, ASU athletic director Lisa Love hired Dennis Erickson to take over as head coach. During his first season as head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, Erickson guided the team to ten victories, shared the Pac-10 championship with USC, and a victory in the Holiday Bowl against the University of Texas Longhorns.
Dennis Erickson was fired by the Arizona State Sun Devils on November 28, 2011, after five seasons as head coach. On December 14, 2011, he was succeeded by Todd Graham, who served as the team’s head coach. In a shocking move, Lisa Love was removed from her job as Vice President for University Athletics and Athletics Director on March 28, 2012, and Steve Patterson took over as her replacement immediately. After 56 years, the Arizona State Sun Devils have returned to their old color scheme from 1951-1954, complete with black helmets.
Terrell Suggs, Jim Jeffcoat, Mike Pagel, Jake Plummer, Todd Heap, J.R. Redmond, Danny White, Randall McDaniel, David Fulcher, Darren Woodson, Pat Tillman, Eric Allen, Zach Miller, Shaun McDonald, John Jefferson, Paul Justin, Jimmy Verdon, Mike Haynes, Al Harris, and Ryan Torain are among the notable football alumni.
The Arizona State Sun Devils have made a total of 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including three appearances in the Elite Eight (1961, 1963, 1975). They have won eight conference titles (four WAC and four BOR) and have placed in the top 10 of the final Associated Press rankings seven times. The Sun Devils’ greatest national rating came during the 1980–81 season when they were coached by Ned Walk and included players like Byron Scott, Fat Lever, and Alton Lister in the starting lineup. During his tenure as head coach of the men’s basketball team from 1958 to 1982, Ned Walk had a 406–272 record, making him the most successful coach in the program’s history (.599).
