Atlanta United FC Biography and Career:
In addition to being known as Atlanta United, the club also plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference. They are the most recent winners of the U.S. Open Cup, which took place in June. Atlanta United was founded in 2014 and became the twenty-second team in the Major League Soccer (MLS) when it joined as an expansion team in 2017. It is the first Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise to be located in Atlanta, and the club plays its home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which the club shares with the city’s National Football League (NFL) franchise, the Atlanta Falcons, in the city’s downtown area.
These two companies are controlled by Arthur Blank, who was a co-founder of The Home Depot. Atlanta United also owns Atlanta United 2, a reserve squad that competes in the United Soccer League (USL) (USLC). Atlanta United’s first head coach, Gerardo Martino, coached the team to their first playoff participation in their inaugural season before winning the MLS Cup in their second season, capturing the club’s first trophy in only their second season. Based on regular-season attendance in 2018, Atlanta United has one of the largest fanbases in Major League Soccer, and the club has established multiple league milestones, including the most fans in a single match and the highest average attendance.
Sportivo predicted that the club was the second most valuable in the league in 2021, with a market value of roughly $845 million. The name, logo, and “a colour scheme that will fit with the red and black with… gold” would be chosen with the help of the fans, according to Arthur Blank (the colours used by the Falcons when they launched in 1966). According to a storey published on June 25, 2015, by Sports Illustrated, Atlanta’s expansion team will be known as Atlanta United FC.
Announcing the team’s name was made public for the first time on July 7, 2018. Darren Eales, the president of Atlanta United, indicated that the team’s name was decided after a survey of the team’s followers and that it included words that the supporters associated with the potential team in the most positive way.
Also said was that the Founders’ Group meeting would still go place on July 7 and that the logo for the new team would be revealed at the meeting. On July 7, 2015, the team’s name, logo, and colours were announced for the first time. The logo is comprised of a circle reminiscent of the city’s seal and Olympic tradition, with a large “A” in the centre of the circle, which represents the city’s Olympic heritage.
The “A” is flanked by five black and red stripes, which reflect the five pillars of the team: unity, determination, community, excellence, and innovation, among other things. The official colours of the team are black (for strength and power), red (or “Victory Red,” as the squad refers to it, for pride and passion), and gold (for excellence and prestige) (for a commitment to excellence).
“The Five Stripes” has established an unofficial nickname for the squad, which is a reference to the five stripes that appeared on the team’s first-ever home uniforms. As part of the United States Soccer Development Academy, Atlanta United has a young academy that competes against other teams from across the world.
The academy began competing in the 2016–2017 United States Soccer Development Academy season and currently features seven youth teams: U-19, U-17, U-16, U-15, U-14, U-13, and U-12. In addition to being free, participation in the academy provides individuals with the opportunity to be signed to the Atlanta United first team as a “Homegrown Player” if they meet the requirements.
In addition to its USSDA programmes, the academy runs a soccer development programme, which identifies individuals who are currently playing for local young clubs and encourages them to join the academy’s programmes. The club also operates the Atlanta United Regional Development School, a pre-academy feeder programme for players aged 8–14 that provides training and development for advanced local players while also identifying potential academy players.
The club also operates the United Juniors Program, a special development programme that provides supplemental development for U-12 players who are currently playing for other Atlanta-area youth clubs, as well as the Atlanta United Youth Academy. Announcing plans for training facilities, academy facilities, and a sporting headquarters in Decatur in August 2015, the club drew widespread attention. However, the results of an environmental and geotechnical feasibility study revealed that the site on Memorial Drive was unsuitable, and the facility’s construction was halted in November 2015. Instead, a 33-acre site on Franklin Gateway in Marietta was chosen for the facility’s construction.
The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, a $60 million facility that opened on April 11, 2017, was dedicated on that day. An approximately 30,000 square foot building that serves as the club’s sporting headquarters and houses locker rooms for the first team, reserve teams and academy teams as well as a full-service dining hall and sports science facilities, which include a gymnasium and two hydrotherapy plunge pools, are among the features of the facility.
The complex also has six outdoor training fields, one of which serves as a showcase field with a seating capacity of 2,500 people and a concession stand. It was unanimously agreed upon by the Marietta City Council on March 28, 2019, to sell the club an extra 17 acres (6.9 ha) of land in order to expand the club’s training facilities. The council also decided to extend the existing facility’s lease on city-owned land for an additional five years. Atlanta United FC is a subsidiary of AMB Sports & Entertainment.
