Bernard Marcus was born in Newark, New Jersey. His parents, who were Jewish and came from Russia, were Jewish. He grew up in a slum, and in 1947, he got his high school diploma from South Side. Marcus’s father put him to work as a cabinet maker in the family business because he couldn’t pay for medical school. The goal for Marcus was to become a doctor. He went to Rutgers University, where he got his degree in pharmacy.

He was the first CEO and chairman of the company until he retired in 2002. He was also one of the people who started The Home Depot. Marcus worked as a pharmacist at a pharmacy, but he found that he liked helping customers and making sales more.

After working at a cosmetics company and in a number of other retail jobs, he finally became the Chief Executive Officer of Handy Dan Repair Centers, a network of home improvement shops based in Los Angeles. In 1978, there was a power struggle at Handy Dan, and both he and Arthur Blank, who later started Home Depot, lost their jobs. With the help of Pat Farrah, a marketing expert, and Ken Langone, an investment banker in New York, they started The Home Depot in 1979.

Farrah and Langone were in charge of getting investors together. The shop’s warehouse model was the first of its kind in the field of home improvement. Blank, Marcus, and Langone all got to the point where they were each worth $1 billion. Marcus was the company’s first Chief Executive Officer. He held that position for 19 years until he retired in 2002. During that time, he also led the board of directors.

In February 2019, the Job Creators Network showed an ad on a billboard in Times Square that said they didn’t like Amazon’s decision to drop its plan to put a headquarters in New York City.
