Carl Icahn Biography and Career:

Carl Celian Icahn is a well-known businessman, investor, and giver in the United States. He was born in the United States on February 16, 1936. Icahn Enterprises is a multinational holding company that is part of a conglomerate. It is based in New York City. It was called American Real Estate Partners at first. Icahn started the business and owns the majority of shares in it. He is also the Chairman of Federal-Mogul, an American company that designs, makes, and sells parts for car powertrains and safety devices. In the 1980s, Icahn became known as a “corporate raider” because he bought the American airline TWA quickly and got rid of most of its assets.

Icahn was then called a “corporate raider” because of this. Forbes magazine said in 2019 that Icahn had a net worth of $17.5 billion. This made him number 26 on the Forbes 400 list of the 400 richest people in the world and number 5 on the list of the five richest hedge fund managers in the world. Icahn was President Trump’s special economic advisor on financial regulation for a short time in 2017. He left the job because of worries about possible conflicts of interest. Icahn was born into a Jewish family in the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway in New York City. He went to the nearby Far Rockaway High School for his high school education.

Michael Icahn, who didn’t believe in God, worked as a cantor and then as a substitute teacher until he died. Before she had her own kids, Bella (who was born Schnall) was also a teacher. Icahn went to Princeton University and got his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1957. After that, he went to the New York University School of Medicine, but he only stayed there for two years before dropping out to join the army reserves.

Icahn started Icahn & Co. in 1968. It was a securities company that specialized in risk arbitrage and trading options. With $150,000 of his own money and $400,000 from his uncle, M. Elliot Schnall, he started the company and bought a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. With these funds combined, he could buy a place on the exchange. In 1978, he first started getting positions of power in different businesses.

After he bought Trans World Airlines without permission in 1985, Icahn became known as a “corporate raider” in business. It was called “asset stripping” when it was found out that Icahn had slowly sold off TWA’s assets to pay back the money he had borrowed to buy the company. Icahn turned TWA into a private company in 1988. He made a profit of $469 million himself, but the company was left with a debt of $540 million. He did this by going private with TWA. In 1991, he helped American Airlines make a deal to buy TWA’s London flights for $445 million. He started lowestfares.com to sell tickets for TWA.

He then bought parts of Ramy El-Global Batrawi’s Leisure Travel to add them to lowestfares.com. Icahn tried to buy 89% of the U.S. Steel without permission in the late 1980s, but he failed, costing $7 billion. In July 2001, Icahn’s Riverdale, LLC gave Genesisintermedia a loan of $100 million in exchange for the right to buy 2 million more company shares. In 2004, after Mylan Laboratories said it would buy King Pharmaceuticals, Icahn bought a big block of shares and said he would fight the deal through proxies. At the time, King Pharmaceuticals was Mylan Labs’ biggest rival.

After a while, Mylan decided to stop trying to get King. In 2005, XO Holding announced that it would sell the wired part of its business to Icahn, the company’s chairman and owning most of its shares. The company planned to use the money from the sale to pay off its debts and pay Icahn about $600 million to buy back its preferred stock. Icahn would have had full control of the wired industry and still owned 60% of XO.

Even though Icahn owned most of the company and the board of directors said the deal was in the best interest of shareholders, R2 and other minority shareholders were able to stop the sale in 2008 by going to the Delaware Court. The court punished Icahn for the damage he caused to the company through self-dealing and/or a conflict of interest, which caused the attempt to fail. Icahn bought shares of the company that makes video games, Take-Two Interactive, for the first time in August 2006.

Then, in 2009, he increased his stake in the company to 11.3%, making him the second-largest stakeholder in the company. In January 2007, he did a deal that gave him a 9.2% stake in Telik, a biotech company focusing on cancer research. Besides that, he invested in WCI Communities and bought 6.1 million shares (acquired by Lennar Corporation). Even though he owned about 33.5 million Motorola shares, the company did not offer him a seat on its board of directors in May. Lear Corporation’s board of directors agreed to Icahn’s offer to buy the company for $2.3 billion on February 9, 2007. In the same month, he also put $50 million into Motricity, a company in North Carolina that specializes in getting mobile content to people.

Icahn and his partners controlled a lot of other companies in 2007. These included ACF Industries, American Railcar Industries, Philip Services, and Icahn Enterprises, listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Also, by September, he owned 8.5% of the commercial software company BEA Systems. In October, two months before Oracle Corporation announced it would buy BEA Systems, he increased his company share to 13%. Icahn started a process in 2007 to gradually increase the size of his investment in the biotechnology company Biogen.
