Chris Froome Biography and Career:
Chris Froome, the full name Christopher Clive Froome (born May 20, 1985, Nairobi, Kenya), is a Kenyan-born British cyclist who has won the Tour de France four times. Froome is a member of the British cycling team Team Sky (2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017).
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, to British parents who subsequently divorced after his father filed for bankruptcy, Froome went on to become a world-class cyclist. After moving to South Africa with his mother, who supported his riding, he completed his education and started training with Kenyan rider David Kinjah when he was 12 years old, becoming the youngest person to do so.
Aside from learning Swahili and a little of Kikuyu (a regional language), Froome participated in trips with much-older local Kenyan riders on rudimentary bikes into the dusty rural hills surrounding Nairobi, which were organized by Kinjah. In the following years, after graduating from a South African boarding school, he attended the University of Johannesburg for two years, but, in contrast to his two brothers, who are all accountants, he chose to pursue a cycling career.
Froome began racing professionally when he was 22 years old when he signed with the South African team Konica Minolta in 2007. The next year, he joined the South African-sponsored cycling team Barloworld and rode in the Tour de France, placing 84th of 102 participants. When he was discovered, he was approached by British instructor Rod Ellingworth, who was fascinated by his climbing abilities and was ready to ignore his lack of experience as well as his proclivity to crash on twisting Alpine descents.
The fact that Froome competed for Kenya did not detract from Ellingworth’s encouragement to seek a British racing license so that he might benefit from the knowledge and expertise of British teams. He joined Team Sky in 2010, despite the fact that he was suffering from the consequences of schistosomiasis, a parasitic condition, for most of that year. The next year, he finished second in the Vuelta an Espana (Tour of Spain), and in 2012, he finished second in the Tour de France, finishing behind British Team Sky champion Bradley Wiggins, who won the race in 2011.
Froome’s first Tour de France victory came in 2013, the same year he was named the Velo d’Or winner as the greatest rider of the calendar year. In addition, he was named Team Sky’s captain for the season. In 2015, he was victorious in the Tour de France for the second time.
Because of his continuously high level of performance, concerns were raised regarding the likelihood that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs at some point in his career. Following the 2015 Tour de France, Froome made the findings of his physiological testing public in an attempt to calm these concerns. Despite crashing twice, sprinting uphill on foot when his bike was damaged in an accident, and engaging in a daredevil downhill attack while lying prone atop his handlebars in an aero position, Froome became the first Tour de France winner in more than two decades to successfully defend his title the following year.
Froome won the Tour de France in 2017 with the smallest margin of victory (54 seconds), extending his winning record to three straight Tour de France victories. A little later in the year, he made history as the first British cyclist to win the Vuelta an Espana. In addition, he was the first rider in over four decades to win both the Tour de France and the Paris-Roubaix in the same year. But he was disqualified from the Tour de France when his urine was discovered to have double the allowable quantity of the asthma medicine salbutamol, which resulted in a failed drug test during the race.
Froome said that, although he had upped his medication dose as his asthma became worse, he had not exceeded the maximum dosage allowed. Following that, an inquiry was begun, during which time Froome was permitted to continue participating. With the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) victory in May 2018, he became just the third cyclist to have won the three Grand Tours in a row, joining Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador. The doping case against Froome was dismissed two months after it was filed.
