Darren Aronofsky Biography and Career:

Darren Aronofsky was born on February 12, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York, to educators Charlotte and Abraham Aronofsky. His sister, Patti, is a TV producer. His parents were not religious, but his family was culturally Jewish. He went to Murrow High. As a child, he accompanied his parents to Broadway shows, sparking an interest in the entertainment industry. Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, Terry Gilliam, Shinya Tsukamoto, Hubert Selby, Jr., Spike Lee, Satoshi Kon, and Jim Jarmusch influenced Aronofsky’s love for filmmaking in Harvard. Aronofsky wrote and directed ‘Supermarket Sweep’ for his senior thesis, which was a finalist in the 1991 Student Academy Awards. He obtained his MFA in directing from the AFI Conservatory the following year.

He also earned the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal from AFI. Darren Aronofsky’s debut short film was ‘Fortune Cookie’, made in 1990. After Harvard, he continued to make short films. Aronofsky was intended to helm a Nickelodeon Movies adaptation of David Wiesner’s 1999 children’s novel ‘Sector 7′, but it never happened. Ongoing talks with Warner Bros. for a Batman adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel “Batman: Year One” But it was never made. He co-wrote the script for the 2002 horror thriller ‘Below’. His second project, ‘The Fountain,’ had troubles from the start. Former star Brad Pitt dropped out seven weeks before filming began, while Cate Blanchett couldn’t participate due to her pregnancy.

Cost overruns plagued the project. Warner Bros. abandoned the project. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz star in ‘The Fountain,’ which was released in 2006.
