David Wright Biography and Career:

David Allen Wright is a retired professional baseball third baseman from the United States. He was born on December 20, 1982, and he spent his whole 14-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB) playing for the New York Mets. The Mets selected him in the Major League Baseball draft in 2001, and he made his debut in the Major League Baseball on July 21, 2004, at Shea Stadium.

Wright earned the moniker “Captain America” as a result of his performance in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, in which he led the competition with 10 runs batted in and a batting average of.438.A member of the 30–30 club, Wright has won the Gold Glove Award twice, the Silver Slugger Award twice, and the All-Star Game seven times. He has also won the Silver Slugger Award twice.

Wright is the all-time leader in career plate appearances for the Mets and owns many other team marks for position players. He is also considered to be one of the most adored players in the history of the New York Mets organization. The Mets appointed him as their captain in 2013, making him the fourth person to hold that position in the team’s history. Wright is the third player in Major League Baseball history to play for the Mets during his whole career and has played in at least ten league seasons.

Throughout the second part of his career, Wright suffered from several illnesses, the most significant of which was spinal stenosis. In addition, he also suffered from further maladies in his neck and shoulder. Wright said that 2018 will be his last season as an active player. This decision came after he had missed a large amount of time from 2015 to 2018, and he had received news from his physicians that his spinal stenosis would not improve.

At the end of his career in the big leagues, Wright ended with a lifetime batting average of.296 and 242 home runs in addition to 970 batted in. As a form of compensation for the Mets’ loss of Mike Hampton to the Colorado Rockies in free agency, the Mets added Wright to their roster during the supplemental round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2001. In the first round, Wright was taken, following in the footsteps of his future teammate Aaron Heilman, who had also been selected.

According to Bobby Valentine, who was the manager of the Mets at the time, Wright had drawn the notice of Tom Robson, who was sent “down to Virginia to scout someone else.”Wright made steady growth over his first three years of playing in the minor leagues, with the class A St. Lucie Mets earning the Sterling award for best player in 2003.

At the beginning of his career in the big leagues, Wright made his debut on July 21, 2004, starting at third base against the Montreal Expos. On July 22, Wright had his first hit of his career, a double, off of Zach Day, the pitcher for the Montreal Expos. This was Wright’s first baseball hit. Wright was selected as the Rookie of the Year for the This Year in Baseball Awards after he ended his rookie season with a batting average of.293, 14 home runs, and 40 RBI in 263 at-bats in 69 games.

Wright, at 22 years old, participated in 160 games and batted during the 2005 season.306 with 27 home runs, 102 RBIs, 99 runs scored, 42 doubles, and 17 stolen bases, leading the team in average, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBI, and doubles, and ending second in home runs to Cliff Floyd (34). In addition, he led the team in stolen bases with 17. The National League also ranked Wright among the top 10 players in terms of his average, hits, total bases, runs batted in, extra-base hits, and runs scored.

Wright shares the record for the most mistakes committed by a third baseman in the big leagues with Troy Glaus, who also had 24 errors under his belt. When the San Diego Padres were playing at Petco Park on August 9, 2005, Wright grabbed with his bare hands when he was over the shoulder. The catch occurred during the seventh inning of the game. Brian Giles made a broken-bat blooper that went 20 feet (6.1 meters) past the edge of the outfield grass that occurred with one out remaining in the inning.

When Wright was swiftly retreating with his back to home plate, he stretched his right hand, which was bare, and grabbed the ball cleanly while he was falling to the field. Even after receiving a heavy fall on the outfield grass, Wright was able to keep control of the ball. A standing ovation that lasted for many minutes was performed by the audience at Petco Park, which was completely sold out, in recognition of the magnificent catch.

All of the votes for “This Year in Baseball Play of the Year” went to this one play. Throughout the 2006 season, Wright delivered his fair share of heroic performances. It was on May 5 that he hit his first game-winning hit, a double with two outs that was just out of reach of Andruw Jones, who was pursuing him. The hit came off Jorge Sosa in the bottom of the fourteenth inning, and it helped the Atlanta Braves win 8–7.
