Deshaun Watson Biography and Career:

Derrick Deshaun Watson is an American football quarterback playing for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). Watson was born on September 14, 1995. He participated in collegiate football at Clemson, where he was the quarterback for the 2016 squad that won the national title. The Houston Texans chose Watson as the first overall pick in the National Football League Draft 2017.

Following a great rookie season cut short due to injury, Watson led the Texans to consecutive division victories in 2018 and 2019, and he led the league in passing yards in 2020. In addition, Watson led the Texans to the Super Bowl in 2020. Additionally, he was named to the Pro Bowl after each of the three seasons in which he started the most games for Houston. He has at least 1,500 career attempts, which places him fourth in lifetime completion % and third in all-time career passer rating.

In 2021, Watson was the subject of a lawsuit filed by more than two dozen female massage therapists who accused him of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Despite having settled 20 accusations of sexual misconduct, Watson has maintained that he did nothing wrong. Watson was suspended for the whole of the 2021 season due to disagreements with the front office of the Texans as well as many sexual misconduct cases. This finally led to a trade to the Browns in 2022, where he got a five-year deal for $230 million, one of the richest contracts in the history of the NFL.

During his time playing high school football, Watson established several state records, including the marks for career throwing yards (13,077), career passing touchdowns (155), overall passing yards (17,134), and total touchdowns (218). He amassed 4,057 yards on the ground and scored 63 touchdowns. During his junior year, Watson succeeded greatly, achieving a state title and recognition as a Junior All-American, 2014 Player to Watch, and 2014 Top 100 Recruit.

As a head coach, Watson guided Gainesville to the state semifinals during his sophomore and senior seasons. In January 2014, Watson became a student at Clemson. When Watson played football in high school, he wore the number 4, but when he arrived at Clemson, that number had already been retired since quarterback Steve Fuller had worn it. Despite this, Fuller permitted Watson to wear the number.

Although Watson began his first year as a true freshman as the backup to the starter Cole Stoudt, he was still given a significant amount of playing time. He outperformed Stoudt in three games by completing 29 of 41 passes for 479 yards, four touchdowns, and without throwing any interceptions. On September 21, Watson was given the starting position for the Tigers. Watson started his first career against the North Carolina Tar Heels and led his team to a 50–35 victory by throwing for 435 yards and setting a school record with six touchdown passes.

During the first quarter of the game on October 11, 2014, against the Louisville Cardinals, Watson suffered a bone fracture in his right hand. As a direct consequence of the injury, he could not play in the games against Boston College, Syracuse, and Wake Forest. After returning for the game against Georgia Tech, he suffered an LCL strain and was out most of the contest. He sat out of Clemson’s game against Georgia State the next week, but he was instrumental in the Tigers’ triumph over their in-state rival South Carolina the week after that.

It came out that Watson had played the game despite having a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. He had surgery on Friday, before Clemson’s bowl game versus Oklahoma. In 2015, Watson led the Clemson football team, which he guided to a regular season record of 12-0 and a #1 rating in the polls. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Tigers earned a spot in the ACC Championship Game, in which they competed against the number 10 North Carolina Tar Heels.

Clemson’s first Atlantic Coast Conference title since 2011 came courtesy of Watson’s performance, in which he led the Tigers to a victory by throwing for 289 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 131 yards and scoring twice on the ground. Additionally, Watson was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the ACC Championship Game. The Clemson Tigers are the top-ranked team that will represent the Southeastern Conference in the 2016 College Football Playoff.

In the Orange Bowl, one of the two games that comprised the College Football Playoff semifinals, they competed against the Oklahoma Sooners, who had the fourth seed. Watson was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after leading Clemson to a victory by scoring 37 points and throwing for 189 yards and a score while also running for 145 yards and scoring a touchdown. Clemson moved on to the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship game, where they faced the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide and were defeated 45–40. The Tigers progressed to the game because of their victory.

Even though his team was defeated, Watson exceeded the 4,000-yard passing mark by throwing for 405 yards and scoring four touchdowns throughout the game. He also ran for 73 yards. Against the team with the top defense in the country, he threw for 405 yards and ran for 73 yards for a total of 478 yards, which established a new record for most total yards in the history of the national championship game. During his true sophomore season, he finished the year by passing more than 4,000 yards and running more than 1,000 yards. In the annals of college football, Watson goes down in history as the player who first accomplished this accomplishment.
