Dominic Raab Biography and Career:

Mr. Dominic Rennie Raab (born February 25, 1974) is a British politician who has served as Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor since 2021. He is the son of the late Dominic Raab. Since 2010, he has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Esher and Walton. He is a member of the Conservative Party and served as Brexit Secretary in 2018 before being appointed First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary in 2019. He will serve as Foreign Secretary until 2021.

Raab was born in Buckinghamshire and went to Dr. Challoner’s Grammar School before becoming a professional actor. He received his undergraduate degree in law from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, before transferring to Jesus College, Cambridge, for his master’s degree. He started his professional career as a lawyer at Linklaters before moving on to positions at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as a political adviser. He was elected to represent the constituency of Esher and Walton in the 2010 general election.

From 2015 to 2016, he served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Civil Liberties and Human Rights, a position he held for two years. Following Prime Minister Theresa May’s appointment, Raab returned to the backbenches. However, following the 2017 general election, he was named to the second May cabinet as Minister of State for Courts and Justice (Minister of State for Justice). His position as Minister of State for Housing and Planning was created in the 2018 cabinet reshuffle, which he took up in January.

As a result of David Davis’ departure, Raab was elevated to the position of Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in January 2018. However, two weeks later, Raab was deputized by May to negotiate the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, allowing him to focus on domestic preparations rather than international negotiations. Raab resigned from his role as Brexit Secretary four months later, citing his disagreement with May’s proposed Brexit separation deal.

Following May’s departure in 2019, Raab sought the position of prime minister but was defeated in the second round of voting by Conservative MPs. Raab was named First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs after the inauguration of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister. Upon the amalgamation of the Department for International Development with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (in 2020), Raab’s position was renamed Secretary of State for the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs. His cabinet positions were reshuffled in 2021, and he now holds the positions of Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor.

Dominic Rennie Raab was born on February 25, 1974, in the English county of Buckinghamshire. He is the son of Jean Raab, a clothing buyer at Marks & Spencer, and Peter Raab, a food manager for the company. Having fled Czechoslovakia with his Jewish mother when he was six years old, his father immigrated to Britain in 1938 as a result of the Munich Agreement, which ceded sections of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany. Raab was brought up in the Church of England, following in the footsteps of his English mother. He grew raised in the Buckinghamshire village of Gerrards Cross. Cancer took Raab’s father from him when he was just twelve years old.

He went to Dr. Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham and worked as a volunteer on Kibbutz Sarid before going on to study law at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford, where he shared a hallway with Cathy Newman, who would go on to become a Channel 4 News presenter. Raab spent his time at Oxford “doing a lot of karate and led the university karate team,” and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford in 2010. Further studies were subsequently undertaken at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was awarded the Clive Parry Prize for International Law and graduated with a Master of Laws degree in his final year.

After graduating from Cambridge, Raab worked as a trainee solicitor at Linklaters in London, where he completed his two-year training contract before leaving the business soon after qualifying as an attorney in 2000. He worked on project financing, international litigation, and competition law matters while at Linklaters. This includes time spent on secondments at Liberty (a human rights organization) and in Brussels, where he provided legal advice on EU and WTO legislation.

Raab joined the Foreign Office in 2000 and has worked on a variety of projects, including directing a team at the British Embassy in The Hague that is committed to bringing war criminals to justice. Raab received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge in 2000. After returning to London, he provided advice on a variety of issues, including the Arab–Israeli conflict, the European Union, and the status of Gibraltar. He represented former British Prime Minister Tony Blair against a subpoena issued by former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

Raab served as Chief of Staff for Shadow Home Secretary David Davis from 2006 to 2010, and then as Chief of Staff for Shadow Secretary of State for Justice Dominic Grieve from 2010 to 2012.
