Edmonton Oilers Biography and Career:
Edmonton, Alberta, is home to the Edmonton Oilers, a professional ice hockey club. Teams from the West battle against each other. When the Edmonton Oilers were founded on November 1, 1971, they were one of the 12 founding teams of the World Hockey Association (WHA).
A WHA club that moved to Cleveland, Ohio, before the start of the WHA’s first season, the Alberta Oilers were renamed. The Edmonton Oilers returned to their original name for the next season. In 1979, the Oilers were one of four new teams founded by the NHL’s merger with the WHA.
Since the merger of the NHL and WHA, this is the most championships won by any team since 1967, as well as the most championships won by each team that joined the league after 1967. Since the NHL’s 1967 expansion, only the Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup more times than any other team.
The Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s have been recognized as a dynasty by the Hockey Hall of Fame. On November 1, 1971, the Edmonton Oilers were one of the twelve founding WHA teams. The team was created by Bill Hunter. The Edmonton Oil Kings junior ice hockey team was owned by Hunter, who died in 2010. Curtis Joseph’s stellar goaltending helped the Oilers into the playoffs for the first time in five years in 1996–97. In the second round, the Oilers were knocked out of the playoffs by the Colorado Avalanche.
In 1997–98, Joseph led the Oilers to a first-round upset. The Oilers kept Colorado to a scoreless tie for eight consecutive periods en route to a 3-1 series victory. Dallas and Edmonton met again in the second round, but this time the Stars triumphed. There were four straight seasons in which the Oilers made it to the playoffs, but they were always eliminated early.
The Oilers had off-ice issues, despite their success in the previous two seasons. Peter Pocklington, owner of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1990s, pondered moving the team to Minnesota. For a brief period in 1998, Leslie Alexander, the owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, was close to purchasing the franchise from Pocklington, who was interested in moving the club to Houston, Texas.
Head Coach, Tom Renney’s contract was not renewed by the Oilers on May 17, 2012, one month after the completion of the 2011–12 season. The following month, Edmonton selected Nail Yakupov with the first overall selection in the NHL Entry Draft.
Ralph Krueger, the Oilers’ former assistant coach who had been promoted to head coach the season before, was named head coach a week later, on June 27. It wasn’t long before the Edmonton Oilers announced that they had agreed to a deal with highly sought-after free agent defender Justin Schultz.
NHL club owners went on strike when their collective bargaining agreement with the league expired, and as a result, the 2012–13 season was postponed. Training camps began on January 13, 2013, and the season began on January 19 with a 48-game schedule after the owners and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) reached a new labor agreement (down from 82 games).
It was on this day in 2013 that the Edmonton Oilers will begin their truncated season. This new $480 million arena is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2016–17 season, after the City of Edmonton council voted 10–3 to accept a contract on January 23, 2013. The new 18,641-capacity facility Rogers Place was announced on December 3, 2013, by the company that owns Rogers Communications.

Smyth announced his retirement on April 11, 2014, and played his last NHL game on April 13, 2014, when he was ceremonially anointed club captain, the day after he declared his retirement. When Dallas Eakins’ contract expired at the end of the 2014–15 season, MacTavish announced that he had been relieved of his duties as head coach.
Assistant coach Todd Nelson will take over for the rest of the season. As a player, Nelson was a member of the Edmonton Oilers AHL affiliate team, the Oklahoma City Barons. On January 29, 2015, the American Hockey League announced that the Bakersfield Oilers will join the AHL’s newly formed Pacific Division. The Bakersfield Condors were officially unveiled as the team’s new name on February 25. On April 2, 2001, the Condors presented their brand-new logo.
