Elizabeth Blackburn Biography and Career:

Elizabeth Blackburn is a faculty member of the Department of Biology at the University of California, San Francisco. Her ancestry may be traced back to both the United States and Australia. Telomeres are the caps that sit at the very end of chromosomes, and her study on them made her renowned. Telomerase is the enzyme that is responsible for telomere regeneration.

Blackburn is credited with helping to discover this enzyme. As a result of her contributions to this field, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009, together with Carol W. She was born on November 26, 1948, in Hobart, Tasmania. When she was four years old, her family moved to Launceston, and she spent the next ten years there. In 2008, she was given the distinction of being awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO Laureate for Women in Science for the Americas.
