Elizabeth Blackburn Biography and Career:

Elizabeth Blackburn is a faculty member of the Department of Biology at the University of California, San Francisco. Her ancestry may be traced back to both the United States and Australia. Telomeres are the caps that sit at the very end of chromosomes, and her study on them made her renowned. Telomerase is the enzyme that is responsible for telomere regeneration.

Blackburn is credited with helping to discover this enzyme. As a result of her contributions to this field, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009, together with Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak. In addition to her work in medical ethics, she was dismissed from her position on the President’s Council on Bioethics under the administration of George W. Bush, which was met with much controversy.

She was born on November 26, 1948, in Hobart, Tasmania. When she was four years old, her family moved to Launceston, and she spent the next ten years there. During that time, she attended what was once known as the Broadland House Church of England Girls’ Grammar School and eventually became a Launceston Church Grammar School member.

After relocating to Melbourne with her family, she enrolled in University Good School, and when it came time for her to take the state’s final matriculation tests at the end of the school year, she performed well. After what seemed like an eternity, she was awarded her graduation from University High. After that, she attended the University of Melbourne to pursue a degree in science, from which she emerged with a Bachelor of Science in 1970 and a Master of Science in 1972.

She attended the University of Cambridge, where she studied at Darwin College, and received her Ph.D. there in 1975. After that, from 1975 through 1977, she was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Molecular and cellular biology at Yale University.

Blackburn became a lecturer at the Division of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981. In 1990, she uprooted her life and relocated to the other side of San Francisco Bay to take a position as a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, San Francisco. Between 1993 and 1999, she served as the division’s chief. In addition to that, he is a non-resident fellow at the Salk Institute at the moment. Blackburn is a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, now working in the Division of Biochemistry and Biophysics. In addition to that, she is now working at the Salk Institute as a Non-Resident Fellow.

Throughout her career, Blackburn has garnered the respect of her contemporaries and has been singled out to receive several significant prizes. She was given the position of president of the American Society for Cell Biology in the year 1998. After being admitted to the Royal Society of London in 1992, joining the American Academy of Microbiology in 1993, and becoming a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2000, Blackburn was first inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1991.

In 1993, she accepted the ‘National Academy of Sciences’ invitation to become a Foreign Associate. She was granted membership into the prestigious Institute of Medicine in 2000. Her work was recognized with the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award for Basic Medical Research in 2006. She was honored to be designated one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2007. In 2008, she was given the distinction of being awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO Laureate for Women in Science for the Americas.

Telomerase is the enzyme that is responsible for telomere regeneration. Blackburn is credited with helping to discover this enzyme.
