Her directorial debut, Lionheart, is the first Nigerian film ever submitted to the Academy Awards and the first Nigerian film ever released as a Netflix Original.

Due to the film’s preponderance of English speech, the jury voted against giving it the award. Although Genevieve spent most of her formative years in Lagos, she was born in Mbaise, in the Nigerian state of Imo. The fourth of eight kids, she grew up in a middle-class family. Her parents were both educators; her father was an engineer, and her mother was a preschool teacher. Originally from Yaba, Lagos, she attended Methodist Girls College before transferring to the University of Lagos, where she earned a BA in creative arts. In the 2010 film Ijé: The Journey, for which she received widespread critical acclaim, she finally received her due recognition. She has acted in almost 200 movies from the Nigerian film industry or Nollywood.

Nnaji signed a recording contract with the Ghanaian music label EKB Records in 2004, the same year she released her debut album, One Logologo Line. This is an amalgamation of R&B, Hip Hop, and Urban music. Genevieve Nnaji beat out a lot of other celebrities in 2004 to become the face of Lux. In 2005, she made history by becoming the first actress ever to win the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The Africa Movie Academy is responsible for the honor.

As of 2009, Nnaji was one of the best-paid actresses in Nigeria. She was the first actress to win Best Actress at the 2001 City Peoples Awards for her performance in the Nigerian film industry. Awards had previously only been given out to politicians and large corporations. Furthermore, in 2003, she became the first actress in Nigeria’s history to be honored by the country’s censors with the Best Actress award. In 2009, when she was still working, Oprah Winfrey referred to her as the “Julia Roberts of Africa.”

In 2015, Nnaji debuted her first film, The Road to Yesterday. At the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the film was named Best Movie Overall–West Africa. In January 2018, it was reported that Genevieve would replace Funke Akindele as one of the Dora Milaje in the next Marvel film Avengers: Infinity War. The actor in the issue was later found to have not been in the film, and the rumor was exposed as a fake spread across the internet. Netflix acquired her directorial debut, Lionheart, on September 7, 2018, making it the first Nigerian film in the streaming service’s history.

Farming, an autobiographical film directed by Akinnuoye-Agbaje, premiered internationally at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film also featured Kate Beckinsale, Damson Idris, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Akinnuoye-Agbaje. At the same time as Farming, the film had its official premiere.

Genevieve Nnaji is also a strong supporter of women’s equality. She campaigns for the right of young women in Nigeria to have a say in deciding whom they will marry. She is very much against child brides. She takes a firm stand against discrimination against women anywhere in the world.

Genevieve claims to be an activist who speaks up for those who need help. As a bonus, Genevieve Nnaji is an advocate for gender equality. She argues that women should have the autonomy to make their own decisions and pursue their passions regardless of the opinions of others, which is the foundation of her kind of feminism. Nnaji has been featured in various commercials, including those for Pronto (a beverage) and Omo.

In 2004, she signed a sponsorship deal that made her the “Face of Lux” in Nigeria, a highly-paid position for which she was compensated handsomely. Her film, Lionheart (2018), was selected by the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. In 2019, we came to this conclusion. The 2018 film Lionheart was released to the public. It was the first time in the country’s history that a movie was considered for the Academy Awards.

This Oscar submission was ultimately rejected because it did not meet the criteria for the language category. Conversations in this film are primarily spoken in English. However, since 2006, movies have needed to feature what is known as a “Predominantly non-English Dialogue Track” to be considered for an Academy Award.

This shift accommodated better movies that draw from various cultural canons. On November 4, 2019, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay tweeted her disagreement with the Academy’s decision to remove Lionheart from Oscar contention because it was not written in English, the language of the Academy’s official language.
