John Nettles Biography and Career:

John Vivian Drummond Nettles, OBE, is an English actor and author who was born on October 11, 1943. He is best known for his leading roles as detectives in the crime drama television series Midsomer Murders (1997-2011) as Detective Inspector Tom Barnaby and Bergerac (1981-1991), in which he played the series’ title character.

A number of television series have been narrated by him. Nettles was born in 1943 in St. Austell, Cornwall. During the Second World War, his Irish-born birth mother travelled to the UK to work as a nurse. Eric Nettles, a carpenter, and his wife Elsie adopted him at birth.

He went to St. Austell Grammar School as a child. His passion in playing began when he attended the University of Southampton in 1962 to study history and philosophy.  After graduating, he joined the Royal Court Theatre. At the University Theatre in Manchester in 1969 for the 69 Theatre Company, Nettles played Laertes to Tom Courtenay’s Hamlet.
