Jose Mourinho Biography and Career:

José Mourinho, a Portuguese football manager and former player, oversees Manchester United in the Premier League. He has previously coached teams such as Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale, and Real Madrid, where he amassed a great win percentage and brought home several significant championships.

Several players, opposing coaches, and analysts rank him among the world’s best and most successful managers. His unique approach to team management is a direct result of his extensive tactical expertise, flexibility, and insatiable desire for excellence. He often deploys three or more center midfielders because he thinks dominating the midfield is critical to victory.

Due to his flamboyant and self-confident managerial style, he has been at the heart of many controversies despite his on-field success. The English media even labeled him “The Special One,” a reference to a phrase he made in the past. He has also been engaged in on-field brawls, the most noteworthy of which saw him gouging the eye of Barcelona’s assistant coach Tito Vilanova.

Jose Mourinho was born on January 26, 1963, to professional footballer José Manuel Mourinho Félix and primary school teacher Maria Jlia Carrajola dos Santos, a middle-class family in Setbal, Portugal. He picked up valuable insight into the game by tagging around to his dad’s weekend matches and training sessions.

He attempted to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the Belenenses youth squad with hopes of becoming a professional football player. Still, his lack of strength and speed led him to pursue a career as a coach instead. He decided to change his major from business to sports science at the Technical University of Lisbon, where his mother had initially enrolled him. He taught physical education for nearly five years after graduating from college.

José Mourinho married his high school girlfriend Matilde “Tami” Faria in 1989. In 1996, Matilde joined the family, and in 2000, José Mário, Jr. His kid is a member of the Fulham youth football squad. Since 2014, he has served as a Global Ambassador for the World Food Programme of the United Nations and is active in other charitable endeavors. His “lucky” garment was given to Tsunami Relief as part of a youth initiative that used football to foster peace between Israeli and Palestinian youngsters.

After briefly working as an assistant manager at Estrela da Amadora and a scout for Ovarense, José Mourinho returned to his birthplace in the early 1990s to coach the Vitória de Setbal minor club. In 1992, Sporting Club Portugal hired him as an interpreter to work with legendary foreign coach Bobby Robson.
After getting along well, he joined Robson at FC Porto in December 1993 to serve as Robson’s assistant coach.

The squad won the 1993–1994 Taça de Portugal, the 1994–1995 and 1995–1996 Portuguese championships, and 1994, 1995, and 1996 Portuguese Super Cups, and advanced to the semifinals of the 1993–1994 UEFA Champions League. In 1996, he accompanied Robson once more on his move to Barcelona, where he coordinated practices and gave tactical advice to the team. They helped Barcelona win the European Cup Winners’ Cup, capping off another great season.

When Robson left for another club the following year, Mourinho stayed put and led Barcelona to back-to-back La Liga titles as Louis van Gaal’s assistant. Later, Van Gaal allowed him to take charge of Barcelona B and even the leading team for the 2000 Copa Catalunya, which they won. After accepting the manager position at Benfica in September 2000, Robson offered him the assistant coach position at Newcastle United, but he turned it down. After a short time at Benfica, he transferred to Uniao de Leira in 2001 and was instrumental in the club’s rise in the league standings.

Starting on January 23, 2002, he led a struggling Porto squad to 11 wins and 15 draws by the season’s conclusion. In 2003, he won the Taça de Portugal, the UEFA Cup, and the Primeira Liga for the first time.
After losing in the Portuguese Super Cup final, Porto won the Primeira Liga and the UEFA Champions League the following season. The season’s high point was a victory against Manchester United, then managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, contributing to his June 2, 2004, transfer to Chelsea.

He spent a fortune on transfer fees to get talented players and took most of his support staff from Porto. During his time as Chelsea’s highest-paid manager, the club won two Premier League Cups, two Football League Cups, and one FA Cup, but not the European Champions League.

He was the most successful manager in Chelsea’s history until he abruptly quit the club on September 20, 2007, due to differences with owner Roman Abramovich. He signed a three-year deal with Internazionale (Inter Milan) on June 2, 2008. Supercoppa Italiana and Serie A title in his first season at Inter Milan helped the team capture the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UEFA Champions League triple the following year.

On May 28, 2010, he signed a record-breaking contract to transfer from Inter Milan to Real Madrid. After a lackluster first year, he guided the squad to a La Liga championship the following year. After returning to Chelsea in June 2013, the club ended the 2013–14 Premier League season in third place, four points behind champions Manchester City. The following year, in his third season as manager, his club won the Premier League and the Football League Cup.

He signed a four-year deal with Chelsea on August 7, 2015. However, he departed the club after they lost nine of sixteen games that season. He became the first United manager to win the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season after signing a three-year deal with the club on May 27, 2016.
