While working as the program guide editor for KPFK-FM, she became acquainted with Dennis Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt made his acting debut when he was only six, playing in a handful of made-for-television movies from the late 1980s and two episodes of Family Ties. After playing the central part of David Collins in the 1991 reboot of the television series Dark Shadows, which lasted just a few seasons, he debuted in the feature film industry the following year with a supporting role in Beethoven. Later, in the same year, he had a role in the film A River Runs Through It, in which he portrayed a younger version of Craig Sheffer’s character.

Gordon-Levitt played the central part of Gregory in the film Switching Parents, which was based on the tale of Gregory Kingsley, a youngster who obtained the right to divorce his parents legally. Gordon-Levitt played the role of Gregory when he was only 12 years old. In the 1994 comedy Holy Marriage, he portrayed the part of a Hutterite youngster. The following year, he starred as the main character in the critically acclaimed Disney picture Angels in the Outfield. Throughout 1993 and 1995, he appeared on many episodes of the comedy Roseanne.

In the first season of That ’70s Show, which aired in 1998, he appeared as a guest star in the episode “Eric’s Friend,” playing the role of a homosexual classmate of Eric Forman’s.

In the latter half of the 1990s, he also had guest appearances in several movies, such as The Juror (1996) and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), a Shakespeare-inspired adolescent comedy in which he and Heath Ledger played the male leads. Between the ages of 17 and 21, he provided the voice of the main character, Jim Hawkins, in the animated film Treasure Planet (2002), which Disney produced. He recorded his lines for the film for four years.

Around the time when he was working on “3rd Rock from the Sun,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt was a student at Van Nuys High School. Throughout the 1990s, he was regularly featured in periodicals aimed at teenagers, which he disliked doing. In addition, he has said that he did not like being recognized in public at this time and specifically stated that he “hates stardom.” Levitt was featured in five of NBC’s public service ads titled “The More You Know” when he was starring in the show “3rd Rock from the Sun.”

During the fourth and final season of “3rd Rock from the Sun,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt played the role of a recurrent character but appeared in less than half of the episodes. He then quit the show. After that, he gave up acting and enrolled full-time at Columbia University for the next two years (the only university he had applied to). He enrolled at the school in the year 2000 and remained there from 2001 through 2004, during which time he studied history, literature, and French poetry as part of the General Studies curriculum.

As a result of studying French at Columbia, he is now devoted and confessed Francophile who is also fluent in French. He has said that leaving his birthplace and relocating to New York City (he presently lives in Manhattan’s Lower East Side) “forced” him to develop as a person and helped him become more mature. When starring alongside George Morfogen in the off-Broadway premiere of Austin Pendleton’s play “Uncle Bob” at the Soho Playhouse in 2001, Joseph Gordon-Levitt made his debut as a stage actor. The production received high praise from critics. Rebellion Productions, LLC was the company responsible for producing the show.

Since making a comeback to acting, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has said that he made the purposeful choice to “be in excellent movies.” During the early 2000s, he acted in a string of films that the Boston Herald called “acclaimed and underseen indies.” These films have “pegged him as a rising star on the indie cinema circuit,” and the Boston Herald has called him that since the early 2000s.

Brick was met with generally favorable critical reception; one reviewer, writing for The Minnesota Daily, praised Joseph’s Gordon-performance Levitt’s as Brick’s protagonist, praising it as “beautiful,” “authentic to the film’s aesthetic,” “unfeeling but not disillusioned,” and “sexual in the most ambiguous sense.” Another critic used the word “astounding” to characterize the performance.

After that, Gordon-Levitt appeared in the film The Lookout. He had the role of Chris Pratt, a janitor who was engaged in robbing a bank. The movie was first made available on March 30, 2007. Gordon-Levitt was referred to as a “quite formidable and formidably unexpected leading man” in a review of the movie published in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

New York magazine remarked that he is a “big tabula rasa actor… a minimalist” and that his role was successful because he “does not capture the space… by what he takes away from the character.” According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “he embraces, more so than acts, a character’s inner existence.” In Killshot, Gordon-Levitt portrayed an assassin opposite Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke.

Gordon-Levitt has received several compliments and laudatory reviews due to his performances.
The New York Times has called Joseph Gordon-Levitt “one of the brightest young stars in the indie firmament,” while Showbiz has noted that Gordon-Levitt has “defied the hackneyed misfortunes that befall most juvenile performers as they grow up.” Gordon-Levitt does not consider himself a method actor, even though he often prepares for his parts by doing research in which he immerses himself in real-life examples of the character.
