Kevin Magnussen Biography and Career:

Having joined McLaren’s young driver program in 2009, the company opted to elevate Kevin Magnussen from there to their F1 racing squad after just four years with the team. He inherited a family relationship with the same team that began 15 years before, culminating in a solitary appearance for McLaren in the 1995 Pacific Grand Prix.

The younger Magnussen followed in his father’s footsteps as he progressed through the ranks, albeit he did not show nearly the same level of promise as his father during his notoriously dominating British Formula Three season. He won the Danish Formula Ford title in 2008 after making the transition from karts, and two years later he was winning F3 races in his first season in the German and European championships, and he is still going strong.

In 2011, he followed in the footsteps of his father, who had previously competed in the British Championship. Kevin Magnussen finished second in the championship behind teammate Felipe Nasr, but his father, Jan Magnussen, won 14 out of 18 races for the title in 1994. Nonetheless, he demonstrated his talents by matching Nasr’s winning streak of seven races in succession.

This resulted in a promotion to Formula Renault 3.5, where for the first time, newer and more powerful cars were utilized in the competition. He performed well, but his season was marred by bad luck, as he lost an almost certain victory in Hungary when his vehicle failed to start on the last lap back to his home track.

The next year, he lived up to his promise and won the championship ahead of a very competitive field that featured fellow McLaren development driver Stoffel Vandoorne and highly ranked Red Bull young racer Antonio Felix da Costa, among others. Magnussen won five races and was denied a sixth victory due to a technical infraction. Magnussen won the championship with five victories. But his consistency was just as astonishing – if the disqualification hadn’t occurred, he would have been on the podium 14 times in the previous 17 races.

Because of McLaren’s sponsorship, he was able to participate in the team’s junior drivers’ testing in 2012 and 2013. Their confidence in Magnussen’s potential was such that they made the startling decision to dismiss Sergio Perez after just one season and elevate Magnussen to be part of their racing squad for 2014.

Magnussen’s Formula One career couldn’t have gotten off to a better start if it tried. Despite qualifying his McLaren-Mercedes on the second row of the grid on his maiden visit to the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, the Australian driver quickly moved up to the third position when Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes had mechanical problems.

Magnussen drove the vehicle over the finish line in the same position as when it left the track, demonstrating admirable maturity. He was eventually moved to second in lieu of Daniel Ricciardo, whose Red Bull had failed a post-race technical inspection. It was the greatest finish for an F1 rookie in 18 years, and the best result for an F1 newcomer in the last five years.

Magnussen and his team, on the other hand, we’re unable to repeat their success, failing to finish on the podium for the remainder of the season. McLaren’s season began with a collision with Kimi Raikkonen on the first lap of his second race in Malaysia, setting the tone for a dismal season in which the team was mired in the middle of the pack. In Germany, he duplicated his fourth-place finish on the grid, but he was struck by Felipe Massa seconds after the green flag flew, putting his race in jeopardy. He was innocent on that particular occasion, but he did find himself on the wrong side of the stewards from time to time.

Despite this, Magnussen finished in the top 12 in 12 of the 19 races he competed in. However, although he was inevitably outperformed by his world champion teammate Jenson Button, it seemed to be a harsh judgment on his performance when he was sacked from the squad the following season, even if his spot was filled by a driver of the level of two-time champion Fernando Alonso. Magnussen found himself back in the driver’s seat for the Australian Grand Prix when Fernando Alonso was injured in a pre-season testing incident, but he was unable to compete because the team had the first of many troubles with its new Honda power unit.

Magnussen was relegated to the sidelines for the remainder of the season, and his prospects of making a comeback in 2016 seemed to be crushed when McLaren terminated their partnership with him. Renault, on the other hand, stated in the run-up to the 2016 season that it had parted ways with Pastor Maldonado and had signed Magnussen to join Jolyon Palmer.
