His younger brother Marc worked in the television industry as a writer, actor, and producer as well. Wilmore developed an early interest in subjects such as science, magic, science fiction, and fantasy as a child, which has influenced the development of his stage act.

The actor defined himself as a “nerd” in an interview with National Public Radio, noting that “the black comic figure used to have this swagger and constantly displayed strength…now there’s a comedy figure where it’s OK to simply be a nerd and be black,” according to the station. Wilmore received his high school diploma from Damien High School in La Verne, California, in 1979. He was a theatre major at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, but dropped out to pursue acting and stand-up comedy full-time instead.
