Leonard Lauder Biography and Career:

Leonard A. Lauder was born in the United States on March 19, 1933. He is a well-known businessman. As chairman emeritus, he has worked for The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. He was the chief executive officer of the company until 1999. Estée Lauder is in charge of many cosmetics brands today, such as Estée Lauder, Clinique, MAC Cosmetics, Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, and La Mer. Aveda and Bobbi Brown are two more companies that Estée Lauder owns. In April 2013, he promised to give the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City 81 of his Cubist paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

The collection has 34 pieces by Pablo Picasso and works by Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Juan Gris. Leonard Lauder is the oldest son of Joseph and Estée Lauder. He is also Ronald Lauder’s older brother. First came Leonard Lauder. His family has a history of being Jewish. He got married to Evelyn Hausner in July 1959. Their two sons are William Lauder, the executive chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies, and Gary Lauder, who runs Lauder Partners LLC.

Before he joined the U. S. Navy and became a lieutenant, he got degrees in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Management. He officially joined Estée Lauder when he was 25 years old, in 1958. Leonard Lauder got a lot of attention in 2001 for making the Lipstick index a measure of the economy that is no longer taken seriously. He married the photographer Judy Ellis Glickman on January 1, 2015. He has lived most of his life in a penthouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Leonard Lauder is a well-known art collector.

He started by buying Art Deco postcards when he was only six. However, his collection mainly comprises works by Cubist masters like Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger, rather than works by American artists. He also has a lot of Klimt art. Much of his art came from some of the most famous collections in the world, like those of Gertrude Stein, the Swiss financier Raoul La Roche, and the British art historian Douglas Cooper.

The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection was a museum show that opened in the fall of 2012 and showed 700 of Leonard A. Lauder’s postcards. Leonard A. Lauder had promised to give the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 120,000 postcards, but this was only a small part of what he gave. In an interview published in The New Yorker, Estee Lauder talked about how postcards turned him into a collector and how he spent his whole life trying to find these “mini-masterpieces.” His late wife Evelyn used to call the collection his “mistress.” The article explained Lauder’s point of view.

Lauder’s interest in postcards brought him into contact with one of the owners of the Gotham Book Mart, a Manhattan bookstore. When Lauder heard that the owner of the Gotham had sold the store’s longtime building and was looking for a new place, he made it his goal to help the store get back into the city. Lauder and his business partner bought a building on East 46th Street and let Gotham use the storefront. The building’s address was 16 East 46th Street.

Soon, Gotham couldn’t pay its rent, so Lauder and his partner sued to get out of their apartment. After the store closed, the New York City Marshal auctioned off the store’s inventory. Lauder and his business partner bought it all at once, which upset many other independent booksellers and collectors who were at the auction and wanted to buy some of the rare books. Lauder has helped the Whitney Museum of American Art in important ways for a long time.

In 1971, he joined the museum’s acquisitions board. In 1977, he was named to Whitney’s board of trustees. At the time, he was president of the company his family had started. He was elected president in 1990 and has been chairman since 1994. He has raised more money for Whitney than anyone else and given the museum a lot of art as donations. This was the most money anyone had ever given to the museum. Through the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Foundation, he and his wife have also helped fund several shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The galleries on the fifth level that hold the permanent collection are named after the couple. He told a reporter from The New York Times in 1998 that being the director of the Whitney Museum was his “dream job.” Lauder gave $131 million to Whitney’s endowment as his most recent gift. Lauder has been a loyal supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for a long time.

He was the main reason the museum’s modern art research center was built. He helped pay for it by putting $22 million into an endowment with other museum trustees and donors. In April 2013, he promised to give the museum 81 pieces of Cubist art from his collection. There are 34 paintings by Pablo Picasso, 17 paintings by Georges Braque, 15 illustrations by Fernand Léger, and 15 paintings by Juan Gris. It is thought that the collection as a whole is worth more than a billion dollars. The owner of Acquavella Galleries, William Acquavella, said it is “without a doubt the most important collection any private person has put together in many, many years.”
