Mark Gastineau Biography and Career:

Marcus Dell Gastineau is a retired American football player who was a defensive end with the New York Jets from 1979 to 1988. He was born on November 20, 1956, in the United States. The first player in the National Football League to lead the league in sacks for consecutive seasons, he was a five-time Pro Bowler and one of his day’s fastest and most feared pass rushers.

On the Top 10 Pass Rushers list compiled by NFL Network, Gastineau was the eighth-best pass rusher in the National Football League (NFL) history. After enrolling at Eastern Arizona Junior College in 1975, he did so to earn All-America accolades in his first season.

Before deciding to attend East Central Oklahoma State University, now known as East Central University, in Ada, Oklahoma, he moved to Arizona State University. He played defensive end there for a single season. After that, he ultimately settled on East Central University. He received the title of Outstanding Defensive Lineman for the North at the collegiate level in the 1979 Senior Bowl. He also scored 27 sacks on quarterbacks.

The New York Jets picked Gastineau in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft, making him the first player ever selected by Eastern Carolina University in the draft. It is believed that the Jets were able to find Gastineau with the assistance of Connie Carberg, who was the first female NFL scout in team history. As a result of a vacancy on the roster, the squad needed to add another defensive lineman to their roster to participate in the Senior Bowl.

In 1982–1984, he was selected to the First team of All-Pros and was unanimously chosen to the All-AFC squad.

During his time in New York, Gastineau was an integral member of the iconic “New York Sack Exchange,” a defensive line for the Jets that included Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons, and Abdul Salaam. During the 1981 season, the four players finished with 66 sacks, with Gastineau accounting for twenty of those sacks (sacks were not officially counted in 1981, although Gastineau’s 20 sacks were behind Klecko’s by barely half a sack). This allowed the Jets to qualify for their first playoff game since 1969.

The consensus All-AFC team and the second All-Pro team recognized him in 1981. The invitation that he, Klecko, Lyons, and Salaam received to ring the ceremonial opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in November 1981 served as the impetus for naming their moniker. While playing against the New England Patriots in the second game of the strike-shortened 1982 season, Klecko suffered a patella tendon rupture in his right knee.

Recently, Gastineau has assumed the role of the unofficial head of the “Sack Exchange.” Even though he was often subjected to double teams, he ended the season with six sacks. He was given the George Halas Trophy and was selected as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the National Football League. In 1982, the Jets were able to return to the playoffs, but they found themselves defeated by the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Championship game.

Both Gastineau and Ken O’Brien, the quarterback who was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, were taken into custody and charged with assault at Studio 54. This marked the beginning of the 1983 season. Despite indiscretion, Gastineau led the National Football League in sacks for the first time with 19 totals. The “Sack Dance” that Gastineau performed after sacking an opponent quarterback became a nationwide phenomenon and made him famous.

The National Football League (NFL) deemed it “unsportsmanlike taunting” in March 1984 and started fining players. As a result, he was forced to quit doing the act. It was a bench-clearing incident in the third quarter of a 27–24 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams at Shea Stadium on September 25, 1983. The altercation started with a sack of Vince Ferragamo by Gastineau, who was subsequently pushed from behind by Jackie Slater. The brawl led to the ban on the dance.
