Olivia O’Brien, a well-known singer and composer, was born and raised in Thousands Oaks, California. In October 2016, O’Brien made available his third song, “Find What You’re Looking For.”

O’Brien released “Hate U, Love U,” the original solo rendition of “I Hate U, I Love U,” as a single in December.  On December 20, 2016, O’Brien additionally released an acoustic music video for the song.  On Late Night with Seth Meyers in July 2016, O’Brien made her broadcast debut while Gnash performed “I Hate U, I Love U.”

On September 19, 2016, O’Brien and Gnash sang I hate u, I love u” on Today for the second time.  O’Brien released “Empty” in February 2017 as the first single off her debut extended play. O’Brien was up for the iHeartRadio Music Award for Best Solo Breakout in March 2017, but Zayn Malik won.  In July, she released “RIP,” the EP’s second single, along with a music video.


In November, she released It’s Not That Deep, her debut extended play, along with the third song, “No Love.” The acoustic rendition of Jack & Jack’s track “Beg,” which was released in January 2018, included O’Brien. The song “RIP” was remixed by G-Eazy and Drew Love and released in June 2018. “UDK,” the first promotional single from O’Brien’s debut studio album, was made available in August 2018.

O’Brien released “I Don’t Exist” as the album’s debut single in September, then “Care Less More” in November. Both singles had corresponding music videos. “Love Myself,” the third single, was made available on February 1, 2019.  O’Brien declared in March that her Was It Even Real? debut studio album would be available on April 26, 2019.

The next promotional singles were “Just Friends” and “Just a Boy,” the last two before the album’s release.  O’Brien worked with the Norwegian band Seeb on the song “Fade Out” in May 2019.  A music video was included with the track.
