Rita Moreno Biography and Career:

Rita Moreno is a Puerto Rican performer who works in acting, dancing, and singing. She was born Rosa Dolores Alvero Marcano on December 11, 1931.She had a career that spanned over seven decades and was known for her work on stage and cinema. Moreno is one of the few celebrities from Hollywood’s Golden Age still alive and well today. She is one of only a select few artists to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, known as the EGOT and the Triple Crown of Acting. This is only one of her many accomplishments.

They include but are not limited to the Academy, Emmy, and Tony Awards. Additional honors include the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2013, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, the National Medal of Arts in 2009, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2015, and a Peabody Award in 2019. Before her breakthrough performance as Anita in West Side Story (1961), Moreno’s early career included supporting appearances in the classic musical films Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and The King and I (1956).

She was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first woman of Latin American descent to receive an Academy Award. Popi (1969), Carnal Knowledge (1971), The Four Seasons (1981), I Like It Like That (1994), and the cult classic Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) are just a few of the other significant films she has been in. Moreno played Valentina in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 reimagining of the musical West Side Story, which he directed.

In the theater, she is most known for her performance as Googie Gomez in the musical The Ritz, which was written by Terrence McNally in 1975. She was awarded the Tony Award for Most Featured Actress in a Musical for this role. She performed the same character in the film directed by Richard Lester in 1976, and it was for this performance that she was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress. In addition, she was an actress in the 1964 production of Lorraine Hansberry’s The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window and the 1985 production of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple.

She appeared as Sister Peter Marie Reimondo in the HBO series Oz, which ran from 1997 to 2003, and she was a cast member on the children’s television series The Electric Company, which ran from 1971 to 1977. She was honored with a Primetime Emmy Award in 1977 and a Primetime Emmy Award in 1978 for her appearances on The Muppet Show and The Rockford Files, respectively. Her parts in the television series Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? (1994–1999) brought her much fame.

The resurrection of One Day at a Time on Netflix (2017–2020) and the television series Jane the Virgin aired on the CW and ran from 2015–2019. A biography titled Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It (2021) was written about her life. Soon after landing in New York, Moreno had her first dancing lessons with a Spanish dancer known as “Paco Cansino.” Paco Cansino was the paternal uncle of film actress Rita Hayworth. Moreno’s first dance teacher was Paco Cansino.

At 11, she began lending her voice to Spanish-language adaptations of films initially produced in the United States. At 13, she made her debut on Broadway, playing the character of “Angelina” in the production of Skydrift in 1945. This performance brought her to the notice of talent scouts from Hollywood. Moreno said that her agent sexually assaulted her while she was a teenager and was working as an actress. Moreno’s cinematic career got off the ground in the latter decades of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Moreno and her mother relocated to a “cottage” in Culver City, conveniently within walking distance of MGM Studios. She was a consistent cinema performer throughout the decade of the 1950s, mostly taking on supporting or little parts, including one in the film The Toast of New Orleans (1950). She had an appearance in the musical comedy film Singin’ in the Rain, directed by Stanley Donen and released the same year, featuring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor. In the movie, she portrayed the role of Zelda Zanders, a silent cinema star.

She said that Gene Kelly “wanted her in the movie” and that she “seemed to fit the role for him.” This was how she was able to get the part, she said. Zelda was a non-stereotypical part of a Hispanic woman, and Moreno applauded Kelly for casting her in it. “He never said ‘Oh, she’s too Latina’, he just thought I’d be fine for it,” Moreno remarked of Kelly’s casting decision. She referred to working on the movie as an “amazing experience” and a “privilege” throughout her time in the industry.

Moreno was featured on the cover of Life magazine in March of 1954, with the headline “Rita Moreno: An Actress’ Catalog of Sex and Innocence.”Moreno believed that the characters she was cast in during this period were very stereotyped, leading to her disliking most of her cinema work during this era. One notable exception to this rule was her appearance in a minor part in the Walter Lang-directed film adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I.
