Ryan Lochte Biography and Career:
Ryan Lochte’s full name is Ryan Lochte. Swimmer Steven Lochte (born August 3, 1984, in Rochester, New York, United States) was one of the most successful Olympians in the sport’s history, winning four gold medals. With his 12 medals, six of which were gold, he became the second most decorated male swimmer in Olympic history, behind only teammate Michael Phelps in that category.
Following high school, Lochte attended the University of Florida (B.S., 2007), where he won seven NCAA swimming championships, including three individual championships in 2006. It was during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens that he first gained public recognition, winning gold as a part of the winning 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay team and a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley (IM), finishing second to fellow American Michael Phelps.
The 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter backstroke, and the 200-meter individual medley were all world records established by Lochte at the 2006 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) short-course (25-meter) world championships in Budapest. The following year, at the FINA World Championships in the 200-meter backstroke, he established his first long-course (50-meter) world record by swimming the fastest time ever.
While competing in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Lochte established a new world record of 1 minute 53.94 seconds, becoming the first American woman to do so. In addition, he was a part of the gold-medal-winning 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay team in Beijing, and he added bronze medals in the 200- and 400-meter individual medley events.
Swimmer Ryan Lochte extended his streak of outstanding results in 2009 and 2010. When he competed in the 2009 FINA world championships, he broke Michael Phelps’s world record in the 200-meter individual medley and went on to win the 400-meter IM. At the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, he won six gold medals, compared to Phelps’s five gold medals.
Later that year, at the FINA short-course world championships, Lochte won an unprecedented seven medals, including gold in all five of his individual races (two of which, the 200- and 400-meter individual medley, were won in world record time) and a come-from-behind victory in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, as well as silver in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay.
Lochte won five gold medals at the 2011 FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary. At the meet, he defeated Phelps twice in head-to-head competition, winning the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley events, respectively. As part of the latter event, Lochte broke his own world record (which he had achieved in a high-tech suit) by setting a new worldwide standard of 1 minute 54.00 seconds, which was the first time this had happened since FINA outlawed high-performance non-textile swimsuits in January 2010. He also won gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke and 400-meter individual medley, demonstrating his great versatility, and he also contributed to the American team’s gold medal in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay.
Lochte started the 2012 London Olympics as one of the favorites, and he got off to a strong start with a convincing victory in the 400-meter individual medley (IM). The rest of the competition, he seemed to struggle in, gaining silver in the 200-meter individual medley (behind Phelps) and bronze in the 200-meter backstroke. As part of the team events, Lochte took home gold in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay and silver in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay.
At the 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships, Lochte took home three gold medals (200-meter individual medley, 200-meter backstroke, and 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay) and one silver medal (4 x 100-meter freestyle relay). Two years later, he earned a gold medal at the World Championships in the 200-meter individual medley and a silver medal in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. During the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he earned the sixth Olympic gold medal of his career as a part of the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay squad.
Events outside of the pool in Rio, on the other hand, overshadowed Lochte’s triumphs in the water. During a press conference on August 14 after returning from an event in the early hours of the morning, he said he and three other American swimmers were robbed at gunpoint by persons impersonating Rio police officers. His claims gained widespread attention across the world. Following the release of conflicting accounts and surveillance footage, Lochte admitted that he had fabricated his version of the morning’s events, which in reality involved an inebriated Lochte damaging a gas station bathroom, after which he and the other swimmers gave money to armed security guards to cover the costs of the damages incurred.
As a result, Lochte was suspended for a period of ten months by the United States Olympic Committee and the United States Swimming Association. When he released a picture on social media in May 2018 showing himself undergoing an IV infusion, his health problems escalated even more. In response to the inquiry, the United States Anti-Doping Agency decided that the infusion, which was of an approved chemical, needed a therapeutic use exemption, which Lochte had failed to get. As a consequence, he was banned for 14 months beginning in July.
