Sade Adu Biography and Career:

A Nigerian-born British singer, Helen Folasade Adu CBE is best known for being the main vocalist for her band Sade. She was born on January 16, 1959, in the United Kingdom. In addition to being one of the most successful female performers in the history of the United Kingdom, she is often acknowledged as an influence on modern music. In recognition of her achievements in the music business, she was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the year 2002. Additionally, in the Birthday Honours for 2017, she was elevated to the rank of Commander.

Sade was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, but had spent most of her childhood in England, beginning when she was four years old. Before joining the band Pride in the early 1980s, she had a minor amount of success as a fashion designer and a part-time model. She had attended Saint Martin’s School of Art in London and got a reputation in the fashion industry. Following her rise to prominence as a singer, she went on to establish the band Sade and, in 1983, she signed a recording deal with Epic Records.

One year later, the band released the album Diamond Life, which went on to become one of the best-selling records of the period and the best-selling debut album by a British female singer. Sade was one of the singers who took part in the Live Aid charity performance that took place at Wembley Stadium in July of 1985. The following year, she would make an appearance in the film Absolute Beginners. Stronger Than Pride was the band’s third album, which was released in 1988, and Love Deluxe was the band’s fourth album, which was published in 1992. Following Sade’s child’s birth in 1996, the band decided to take a break from performing.

In 1999, the band got back together after an absence of eight years, and they released their album, Lovers Rock, in the year 2000. The album included pop tunes and sounds that were more laid back, which was a departure from the jazz-inspired inflections that were present in their earlier work. Before the release of Soldier of Love, which occurred 10 years later, the band did not create any further songs. Two songs have been published by them since then: “Flower of the Universe” for the soundtrack of Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time and “The Big Unknown” for the soundtrack of Steve McQueen’s film Widows. Both of these songs are included in the soundtracks of the films.

Following the completion of a three-year study in fashion design and further modeling for a short period, Sade started doing backing vocals with the British band Pride. During this period, she embarked on a songwriting collaboration with Stuart Matthewman, the guitarist and saxophonist for Pride. Together, with the support of Pride’s rhythm section, they started performing their performances at Pride events.

Her solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator,” which she had written with Ray St. John, gained the attention of record labels. As a result, Sade and Matthewman left Pride in 1983 to establish the band Sade. Other members of the band were pianist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and drummer Paul Cook. At the time that she had her maiden performance at the Heaven nightclub in London, she had already achieved such a high level of popularity that one thousand individuals were unsuccessful in entering the venue.

Sade played their debut gig in the United States of America in May of 1983 at the Danceteria nightclub in New York City. Sade Adu got a recording contract with Epic Records on October 18th, 1983. 1984 was the year when the remaining members of the band signed. Following the signing of the record agreement, the band started recording their first album, which was titled Diamond Life. The whole of the album was recorded in The Power Plant in London, and it took a total of six weeks to complete.

Additionally, Diamond Life was awarded the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985. It was published on July 16, 1984, and it climbed to the number two spot on the UK Album Chart. Additionally, it sold more than 1.2 million copies in the UK. Additionally, the album was a success on a global scale, as it climbed to the top of the charts in several nations and landed in the top 10 in the United States, where it sold more than four million copies.

It was one of the best-selling debut albums of the 1980s and the best-selling debut ever by a British female singer. Diamond Life had worldwide sales of over six million copies, making it one of the most successful debut recordings of all time. On February 25, 1984, “Your Love Is King” was released as the first single for the album. It was a hit in European regions, reaching number seven on the Singles Chart in Ireland and number six on the Singles Chart in the United Kingdom.

Although it reached its highest position on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 54, the song was not as popular in the United States. At the time of its release on September 15, 1984, “Smooth Operator” was the third single from the album Diamond Life. It went on to become the most popular song in the United States. On the United States Billboard Hot 100 and the United States Billboard Hot Black Singles charts, the song reached its highest position at number five. Additionally, it took the top spot on the United States Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
