Shirley Jones Biography and Career:

Shirley Mae Jones is a well-known American actress and singer. She was born on March 31, 1934, in the United States. Throughout her six decades in the entertainment industry, she has portrayed morally upstanding individuals in various musical films, including Oklahoma! (1955), Carousel (1956), and The Music Man (1962). Elmer Gantry (1960) was the film for which she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a vindictive prostitute.

In the musical situation comedy television series The Partridge Family (1970–1974), she portrayed the central character of Shirley Partridge, the widowed mother of five children. The series ran from 1970 through 1974 and co-starred her real-life stepson, David Cassidy, who is the son of Jack Cassidy. Jones claims that many people mistakenly assumed that the legendary vaudeville performer and film actress Mae West inspired her middle name. Still, Jones was named after her aunt.

It just so happened that West, who was playing at the Twin Coaches supper club in Rostraver around the year 1954, was the very first celebrity that Jones had encountered. After some time, the family relocated to the quaint community of Smithton, located in Pennsylvania. Jones started singing in the choir of the Methodist Church when he was only six years old and had vocal instruction from Ralph Lewando. She was a cast member of many school plays when she was a South Huntingdon High School student in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania.

Her first try at an audition was for an open casting call conducted bi-weekly by John Fearnley, who was the casting director for Rodgers and Hammerstein productions of various musicals. Jones had no idea who Rodgers and Hammerstein were then; he had never heard of them. Fearnley was so taken aback by the performance that he went to the other side of the street to find Richard Rodgers, who was conducting rehearsals with an orchestra for an upcoming musical. After that, Rodgers phoned Oscar Hammerstein at his house.

Jones was seen as having significant promise by the two. She was the first and only singer to sign a personal contract with the composers, making her history. They began by giving her a supporting part in the film South Pacific. After gaining acclaim in Chicago for her performance as an understudy for the lead part in her second Broadway musical, “Me and Juliet,” she was promoted to the position of a chorus girl for the production.

Jones’s musically trained vocals delighted Rodgers and Hammerstein, and as a result, she was cast as the female lead in the film version of Oklahoma! in 1955. Soon after that, she appeared in several other film musicals, such as Carousel (1956), April Love (1957), and The Music Man (1962), in which she was often placed in the role of a pure and kind person.

However, she was awarded an Academy Award in 1960 for her portrayal in the film Elmer Gantry, in which she portrayed a lady whose morals are compromised by Burt Lancaster’s character, Elmer Gantry. Her persona ends up being a prostitute who, many years later, runs across the man who abused her and exposes him for who he is. Richard Brooks, the film’s director, initially opposed her being in the movie. However, after seeing her first scene, he assured her that she would be nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.

In the 1963 film, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” she worked with Ron Howard again, who had previously portrayed her brother in “The Music Man.” Jones was cast as a woman with romantic feelings for the professor in the 1965 film Fluffy. It was a massive success during its first season and broadcast in over seventy countries. Within a few months, Jones and the other cast members of the show became prominent figures in popular culture.

Her real-life stepson David Cassidy, who was just 20 years old at the time, portrayed Shirley Partridge’s oldest son Keith on the show and went on to become a teen idol. At the time, David Cassidy was an unknown actor. Several albums and singles by The Partridge Family, including performances by David Cassidy and Shirley Jones, were released due to the program. In the same year, “I Think I Love You” became the first song to ever reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 music list, making Jones the second individual to accomplish this feat.

After Frank Sinatra, she was the first woman to win an acting Oscar and simultaneously had a number-one hit on that chart. This accomplishment has only been duplicated by Cher and Barbra Streisand (Cher had previously topped the singles chart with I Got You Babe in 1965, but she did not earn her Oscar until 1987). In 1970, the hit song “I Think I Love You” by the Partridge Family was recognized by the Recording Industry Association of America (NARM) as the best-selling single of the year.
