South Florida Bulls football Biography and Career:
The University of South Florida Bulls football team is the official representative of the university. Since its inception in 1997, the Bulls have competed in the American Athletic Conference (The American) of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Bulls are a member of the American Athletic Conference (NCAA). The team’s home games are held at Raymond James Stadium, which is located in Tampa, Florida. Jim Leavitt, who had previously served as co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State, was appointed as the team’s first head coach the following year. Because the school did not have suitable football facilities on campus, their first squad meeting was conducted beneath a shade tree.
For its first four seasons, the team competed as an independent in Division I-AA (now Division I FCS), ending with a winning record three times and being rated in the Associated Press Top 25 twice. When they were in their last season in Division I-AA, the Bulls defeated three teams rated in the top 15: No. 13 James Madison, No. 6 Western Kentucky, and No. 1 Troy State; in addition to defeating a team from Division I-A Connecticut. That squad concluded with a 7–4 record, with all four of its defeats coming against opponents from Division I–A.
Bulls went from Division I-A (now Division I FBS) to Division I-A (now Division I FBS), where they maintained their independence. It was only until 2005 that they became a member of the Big East Conference after joining Conference USA in 2003 and remaining there till today (now the American Athletic Conference). On December 31, 2005, the University of South Florida fell to North Carolina State in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, the team’s first trip in a bowl game.
In the inaugural Papajohns.com Bowl, on December 23, 2006, the University of South Florida defeated erstwhile Conference USA opponent East Carolina to claim the school’s first-ever bowl win. From 2005 through 2009, Leavitt guided the Bulls to five consecutive bowl games, compiling a 3–2 record in the process. South Florida defeated Top 25-ranked teams like Louisville (2005), West Virginia (2006), Auburn (2007), Kansas (2008) and Florida State (2005), Auburn (2007), Kansas (2008), and Florida State (2005). (2009). Against opponents that were rated in the top 25 during Leavitt’s tenure, the Bulls went 7–12 under him.
The Bulls made their debut appearance in the Associated Press poll and the BCS rankings during the 2007 football season. They rose to No. 23 after defeating No. 17 Auburn 26–23 in overtime, No. 18 after defeating North Carolina 37–10, No. 6 after defeating No. 5 West Virginia 21–13, No. 5 after defeating FAU 35–23, and finally reached No. 2 after defeating UCF 64–12. They finished the season at No. 2 after defeating UCF. South Florida’s high position was short-lived, as the Bulls lost their next three games and fell out of the top 25 rankings in the process.
The Bulls would bounce back and win three consecutive games to finish the regular season at No. 21 in the BCS standings and No. 23 in the Associated Press poll, respectively. A 9–3 record earned the Bulls a trip to their third consecutive bowl game, the Brut Sun Bowl versus Oregon, where they will face the Ducks. The Bulls came into the game as heavy favorites, but they were embarrassed by the Sun Bowl, surrendering 56 points (a Sun Bowl record).
The University of South Florida was knocked out of the national rankings in both the Associated Press and the USA Today polls as a result of the defeat. During halftime of a game against Louisville, Leavitt grabbed a player by the shoulder pads and punched him twice across the face, according to an inquiry. Leavitt was dismissed on January 8, 2010, after the findings of the investigation.
Another allegation made by the report was that Leavitt interfered with the investigation by instructing many coaches and players to alter their statements. Leavitt argues that he did not strike the athlete but was only attempting to soothe him, and after filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against USF, the school finally agreed to a $2.75 million settlement with Leavitt. Coach Skip Holtz, the son of famed coach Lou Holtz, was appointed as the team’s second head coach on January 14, 2010, after departing from East Carolina.
During his debut season, Holtz guided the Bulls to their first win against the Miami Hurricanes, marking the program’s first triumph. He guided the Bulls to a 31–26 victory against the Clemson Tigers in the Meineke Car Care Bowl after the conclusion of the regular season. USF completed with an overall record of 8–5, marking the fifth straight season in which the Bulls have posted at least eight victories.
Skip Holtz led the Bulls to a stunning 23–20 win against his old institution, Notre Dame, to kick off the 2011 season on the right foot. As a result, the Bulls concluded with a 5–7 overall record, which was the team’s first losing campaign since 2004. When the Bulls concluded with a 3–9 record in the 2012 season, it was the poorest result in school history. The squad struggled once again in 2013. Athletics director Doug Woolard sacked Holtz after the end of the 2012 season, and Holtz was then appointed as the head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he is now serving as an assistant coach.
