Stephen M. Ross is an American who works in real estate, gives money to charity, and owns a sports club. He was born in the United States on May 10, 1940. Ross started the Related Companies in 1972. It is a business that develops real estate all over the world. Ross is now the biggest owner and chairman of the company. The Time Warner Center, where Ross lives and works, and the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project were the two biggest projects that made Related famous. After moving to New York City in 1968, he worked at Bear Stearns in the corporate finance department before taking a job with Laird Inc. as an assistant vice president in the real estate business. After he got into a fight with a higher-up at that company in 1972, he was fired and had to live on the $10,000 his mother had given him.
Using what he knew about federal tax law, he set up business deals for wealthy investors. This helped them protect their income by taking advantage of the generous incentives the federal government offered to encourage the building of federally subsidized affordable housing. In 1972, he was fired from that company. Ross was very successful in his first year on the job. He made a total of $150,000 and moved on quickly to making more complicated business deals. Wayne Huizenga, who owned the Miami Dolphins at the time, sold Ross a fifty percent stake in the team, Dolphin Stadium (now called Hard Rock Stadium), and land near the stadium for $550 million in February 2008. Ross also agreed to take over as the Dolphins’ managing general partner in the future. On January 20, 2009, Ross and Huizenga finished the deal for Huizenga to sell Ross an additional 45% of the club. The total value of the whole deal was $1.1 billion. Ross now owns both the football team and 95% of the stadium because of this.
